Does the store carry dresses you can afford Can you browse the whole collection, or do you only get to see the dresses the sales person chooses for you? If this shop doesn't carry the dress you love, can it be ordered?

Once these questions have been answered and you find a dress or two that you like, there are still more questions you need to ask. Can a particular dress be ordered with different sleeves, or neckline? What alterations can be done and what will that cost? Can you get a written estimate on the alterations? If we order the bridesmaids dresses here, can we get a discount or free alterations? Do you have headpieces and or veils that will go with my dress? How much is the deposit and when is the balance due? What are the cancellation and refund policies? Can we get a Rush on this dress if necessary? These are the most important questions to ask, but you will probably have some of your own. Beware of any shop that won't give you straight answers or written estimates. When you think you have found just the right dress, ask if they can hold it for a day or two, then go home wait at least 34 hours and go back for another look. If you still love it, then go right ahead and buy it.

On the other hand, if your mother, maid of honor, sales clerk or friend thinks a dress is perfect and you are not sure, use the same strategy. Wait a day; go back for a second look before you reject it. If a dress just doesn't feel right or you just don't like it do not yield to pressure from the store staff, friends or even Mom. It is your dress, your day, you decide.

After you have chosen your wedding dress, the clerk or the shop's seamstress will take measurements of your bust, waist and hips, and determine if the dress needs to be taken up. Once the dress is cleaned, it is wrapped in white acid free tissue paper or unbleached muslin. Ordinary tissue paper has acids that can stain and eventually eat holes in your dress. Then the wrapped dress is in is placed in an acid free or paperboard box. Sometimes the box has a viewing window of acetate. Store the box in out of direct light to keep the dress from becoming yellow.

Having your gown cleaned and packaged by a reputable preservationist can cost between $200- $400 depending on where you live. Before sending your dress off to be done, ask if the work is done on site. Also find out if you have to sign a disclaimer and sometimes say that the company is not responsible for damage done during the preservation processes, You should seek out a preservationist who will guarantee her or his work.

To help preserve your dress never wrap it in plastic, don't hang it on an ordinary wood or wire hangar, because the dress could stretch and distort from its own weight. Don't try to clean stains, this could cause them to set.

If you are all tapped out after the wedding you can do things to prolong the life of the dress. Wrap the dress in unbleached muslin, or a white sheet, and store in a sturdy box under your bed. CCTV Camera - Do-It-Yourself Installation Guide

Introduction:

This guide is written for those who do need video security and can't afford costly installation services, or if the CCTV installer is not available in your area - the later is more common than one could think. We will cover most common security equipment types, as it is virtually impossible to go over such a wide rang of different security cameras and recording/video processing equipment available on the market.

I assume anyone considering do-it-yourself CCTV installation has basic knowledge of wiring techniques and practices. I am not to be held responsible or liable for damages to the equipment due to mishandling or misuse. Remember; during the installation always pay attention to safety. Working at heights and using tools can be dangerous, please follow all safety practices. Lets jump right to it now.

Planning: First step of any camera installation is to plan camera and monitoring equipment locations. When planning for camera locations please take in consideration light condition, never install cameras in low light room pointing straight into the sunny area it will add glare to the picture, even if your camera has back light compensation it will not be enough. Use infrared cameras for very dark conditions and/or B/W cameras with as low LUX number as possible. I am not going to discuss proper equipment selection, as this was subject of my last article.

Selecting the best possible camera locations is not easy, and will directly impact the camera views. Besides light conditions, the distance to the monitoring object is equally important. There are many different types and focal lengths of lenses; your selection will depend on light condition and distance from the camera to the monitoring object. In small rooms around 500sq. ft. cameras with standard 3.6mm lens should be OK. Keep in mind that most bullet and board type of cameras come with 3.6mm lens, the greater the distance to the monitoring object the longer focal length of the lens will be needed. There is no ease way of judging lens selection, you can eider guess or buy professional lens selector tool.. Alternatively you can start with your lens selection and if needed get longer or shorter focal length lens later. Other option as far as lens selection goes, is to use variable focus lens, which is very versatile approach and takes the guess out of the lens selection process. For those who do not know what variable focus lens is, it's basically adjustable focal length lens that will allow to change the focal length within specified range, fore example: 2.6mm - 8mm or 5mm - 50mm.

To maximize cameras coverage and get the most out of the CCTV system for least amount of money minimize number of it by placing cameras in strategic places, unless complete area coverage is needed. Avoid overlapping camera views, do not install them with source of light directly in front of it and do not place infrared cameras pointing at each other to eliminate risk of overexposure. These are the most common mistakes that need to be avoided. After the initial camera locations are predetermined, lets look at cable placement. Make sure that it is actually possible and practical to run cable to each location, if running the cable to any camera location is for some reason impossible opt-out for alternate location.

Wiring: The most time consuming and important part of any camera installation is wiring. Plan your installation carefully to minimize cable lengths and insure good quality video signal. Never run cables alongside high power electrical lines, at least 12" spacing between video cable and power lines are recommended. Keep the cable lengths below 400ft and use good quality cable, most people take the cable for granted, but it is actually very important aspect of any installation. The CCTV system is only as good as its weakest component. I usually stick with RG59U with power Coleman cable (YES it is US made) sometimes called Siamese type cable. It is combo cable and will transmit video and power, as an alternative it is sometimes possible to use less expensive RG6 standard coax cable with separate run of 18/2AWG for power.

The Siamese cable is less bulky and easer to run, distribution power supply is recommended with this type of cable as power will be supplied from common place right next to monitor and recording equipment. Using Siamese cable makes for more clean and neat installation, as only one line is required for each camera. Running RG6 cable with separate run for power is the likely solution if power outlets are available near each locations. In this case individual plug in power supplies are used to power them with power cable running as separate and independent line to the camera. Both types of cables are available at dvrexperts. When running the cable it is good practice to leave couple of loops of extra cable at both camera and monitoring locations. This extra length of cable is needed if in the future monitoring or location will have to be moved slightly. After the cable is in place, the labor-intensive part of installation is over, now we can get to the fun part of installation.

Camera mounting: Most s come with mounting screws and bracket included, attach the bracket firmly and remember that in some cases different brackets than the ones supplied with the cameras could be needed.

Attach the camera to the bracket and adjust the position approximately at this time, we will come back to it later. Typical security camera is powered by 12VDC or 24VAC and power input type is screw or push terminals or 2.1mm plug. Power connection will differ for each type of power supply and input style. Most cameras are 12VDC, in this case it is important to observe polarity or you may damage the camera. The power cable has two conductors and in most cases it will be red or white and black cable. Use the red or white for positive and black for negative terminals. If it has screw or push terminals power input connect the cable directly observing polarity, if it is 2.1mm plug, a special 2.1MM Female DC Plug with Flying Leads have to be connected to the cable again keep attention to polarity. The 24VAC connection is very similar, with one major difference - polarity is not important.

Next step will involve some special tools and accessories. We will attempt to go over installation process of BNC crimp-on video connector, I will post video demonstration of BNC crimping techniques shortly so please check the web sites mentioned in this article often.

Steps:
1. Remove about 1/2-inch long outer jacket from the end of video cable exposing braid.
2. Slide the crimping barrel onto the cable with the larger diameter facing end of the cable.
3. Pull the braid backwards exposing the inner isolator material and remove 3/8-inch of it so you have now core conductor exposed.
4. The main part of BNC connector has a small hole on one side; push the exposed core conductor of the cable into that hole as far as it will go.
5. Push all the braid folded backwards in step 3 onto the BNC connector and spread the braid evenly around connector.
6. Push the crimping barrel onto the BNC connector all the way.
7. Using crimping tool, squeeze the crimping barrel onto the BNC connector, now the cable braid is compressed in between crimping barrel and BNC connector assuring secure connection.

BNC connector is on, lets hook it up now and repeat the steps for each camera, if you have purchased 16 camera system you may want to get some coffee first.

Monitor and recorder connection:

Cameras are on, its time to make final connections. I will focused on standard CCTV monitor, standalone DVR recorder and distribution power supply, as this is the most popular and likely solution for most CCTV installations.

First we have to install BNC connectors on this side as well - its time for that coffee again. It is good idea to make room for monitor and recorder now and setup some type of desk, shelf or rack to place all the equipment on.

We need the monitor and recorder in place so we can determine proper power supply location. Power supply should be mounted within couple of feet from the DVR video inputs. After power supply is secured separate the power conductors from the Siamese cable, and run it to power supply. Like we did with the cameras if 12VDC power is used, we need to watch the polarity, each terminal on the power supply is marked, so there should not be any doubt. One of the more apparent differences between film and digital video is the way the cameras handle depth of field. Film cameras have allow for a shallow depth of field (resulting in only the subject area being is in focus), while video cameras offer a larger depth of field (resulting in everything being in focus). To achieve a shallow depth of field with digital video camcorders a depth of field adapter is generally used. Before you rush out to purchase an adapter you should ask yourself if you really need one.

Before you decide if you need one, you have to understand exactly what you are purchasing. A depth of field adapter is not a quick solution. It will not provide perfect results once you install it. They are a tool like any piece of video equipment in your arsenal. This tool, like any, requires mastering. It will take time and practice to achieve the results desired from an adapter. With that said and adapter should not be an impulse by nor one you should rush to buy/build. I will say for most videographers it is a fun tool to experiment with.

Ok, so you decided you want to go for an adapter. The first thing you should do is research. They're are many high-end commercial solution that cost $1000+, however there are also as many 'DIY" versions on the market ($150+) and tutorials for building your own DIY adapter. I can say i have seen footage from many of the 'DIY' adapters and they can be very comparable, if not superior, to commercial solutions. This is why research is the key. You can search sites like Vimeo.com for HD footage from most of the adapters out there. There are also many comparison videos there as well. While researching adapters keep in mind that there are 3 types of adapters; static, spinning, and vibrating. Static is fine, but you run into trouble with keeping the internal ground glass(heart of the adapter) clean, which results in noticeable artifacts and patterns in your footage. The solution is to add movement to the ground glass...hence the vibrating and spinning adapters. Spinning adapter are larger and use a rotating disc as the ground glass, this can actually cause a 'pumping' focus effect if not aligned correctly. Vibrating adapters are my personal choice. They actually vibrate the ground glass, usually in a slight circular, pattern. The vibration is very slight, but enough to make any dirt on the ground glass disappear. Usually vibrating adapter allow for speed adjustment which provides you with even more control.

Okay so you decided you want an adapter and you understand the basics of each type, now what? Now you decide if you want to attempt to build on yourself or purchase one. Purchasing a DIY vibrating adapter will run you at least $250 (most likely more), while a commercial version will be at least 3x as much. Building your own sounds like a cheap route to go right? Well, not exactly. Unless you have the parts available to you at a local store (most likely not) you will probably end up sourcing them online. And you can find great prices online, however, since there really isn't a one-stop shop for parts, you have to factor in shipping. Which really ranges greatly from store to store. This will make a vibrating DIY adapter about $100 - 200 easy. However there are a few creative solutions utilizing PVC pipe and other easy to get parts from local stores. Although many people dread having to paint a room it actually is not that difficult if the correct steps are followed.

Basically painting a room needs to reduce to painting one wall at a time so the job does not seem so daunting. Don't focus on the other room but rather one wall at a time. This method will make the job seems easier and before you know it you will have the entire room painted.

The first thing you want to do is prepare the surface you will be painting. Basically this consists of cleaning the wall. A good way to do this is to use a damp dust cloth or a vacuum and a duster. It is important that there is no dust on the wall because dust will create unevenness and once the paint has dried will be impossible to fix without redoing the entire job.

It is important to make sure that there is plenty of ventilation in the room. You do not want to inhale paint fumes ion a small closed space. For this reason it is usually a good idea to paint with the door to the room open and also open as many windows as possible. You may also want to turn on a small portable fan.

You will want to protect the floor in the case of a spill or paint dripping from the brush or roller. The quickest and easiest way to protect the floor is to cover it with a drop cloth. Drop cloths can be purchased at home supply stores or paint shops. Old sheets also work well as drop clothes. Make sure that your drop cloth has no rips or holes in it that might expose the floor. You will also want to make sure that the drop cloth is setting snuggly against the wall. Masking tape running along the edge of the drop cloth and the bottom of the wall will provide a snug connection.

Next you will want to smooth out any lumps in the wall say using a piece of sandpaper. It is important to make sure that all bumps are fully sanded and that there are no uneven spots. If these areas are not taken care of before painting these spots will be visible after the paint has dried.

While smoothing out the wall from any bumps you will also want to look for any pin holes caused by nails or thumbtacks that may have been used to hang pictures. Paint store will carry a product known as painter's tape this is made for this purpose but masking tape will work equally as well. The important thing is to make sure that the trim is fully covered. Try to limit the amount of wall space that has paint on it. However if you do get tape on the wall you will simply need to just touch up those areas that were missed after you remove the tape.

To apply primer to the wall you will need to apply it with a roller and than let it fully dry. The primer serves to cover the previous coat of paint so that the new paint won't just be absorbed. The amount of primer you will need will depend on the difference in tones from the old color to the new one. When covering a darker color with a lighter one you will need to use more primer. Naturally covering a lighter color with a darker one will require less.

You want to work from the edges and work your way in. To paint the edges of the wall you should use a 2-3' brush. With the brush create a border with the paint. Once this has been completed you can roller on the pain to the center areas. Be sure e to do this in an up and down motion. It is a good idea to go back over the area in a W motion to assure no spots have been missed. You do not need large amount of paint on the roller. The excess paint will just drip off or streak.

Once the wall has been fully covered with paint allow it to dry. This will take about 1 to 2 hours. Once the paint has dried you will want to paint the wall a second time with as light coat of paint. This process makes sure that all areas of the wall or even.

After the second coat of paint you can allow it to dry and the remove all tape and paint any sections that may have been covered with tape. With the first wall complete you can now tackle the next wall. Follow all the steps you used on the first wall and complete the second wall. One wall at a time may seem like you are repeating steps but it will actually make the overall job easier.

So your considering getting yourself a flat screen (or you already have) and now want to explore the benefits to mounting it to your wall. All the terminology and acronyms may be overwhelming at first but I will do my best to explain what you need to know. If you already own a flat screen you can skip over Step 1.

Step 1: Selecting your type of screen, LCD or Plasma.

It is safe to say your interested in a high definition television (HDTV). If your looking for a traditional cathode ray tube (CRT) television you must look elsewhere, they are a dying breed and will not be covered in this article. HDTV's come in variety of types, the major players being LCD's, plasmas, rear projections and front projections. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, it is not important to understand what that is, just know it is the same technology that is behind the flat screen computer monitors you see everywhere. The focus of this article will be on LCD's and plasmas as they are considered flat panels and can be easily mounted to the wall through commonly available mounts.

Let me squash a common misconception right now. LCD technology has come a long way and now produces a picture that is very similar to plasma screens. For the purposes of mounting I will tell you a few of the differences between LCD and plasma. LCD televisions are almost always going to be lighter for their respective size than plasma screens. This makes mounting a little easier and less expensive, as you might not need a mount that is rated for higher weight capacities. You might not need to reinforce the mounts insertion point into your wall either. LCD's are also easier to transport in the event of a move, plasma screens are notorious for cracking/crushing under their own weight when not transported properly.

For those of you that are conscious of "going green" or saving money on your electrical bill, consider LCD's as they consume much less power per respective size than plasma screens. There are many other differences in specifications and performance between LCD and plasma but none that are applicable to mounting. The average consumer/enthusiast would not be able to tell the difference, personally I gravitate towards LCD screens. Hopefully now you have an idea of which television type you will be going with and can proceed to step two.

Step 2: Selecting your screen size.

One of the most commonly asked questions is what size TV to get. Selecting the proper TV size is very important and should not be overlooked. Whenever talking about the screen size remember televisions are measured diagonally (bottom left corner to upper right corner). This assumption should always be made when measuring unless specifically stated otherwise. The biggest thing to consider is how far the majority of viewers will be from the screen. Keep in mind that after mounting your television the majority of screens will sit about 3 inches off the wall. Measure how far your seating is from the wall you plan to mount your screen to. Add 3 inches to your estimate to take into account the mount which will sit between the wall and your screen. The general rule for HDTV's is the viewer wants to be approximately 1.5 - 3 times the distance in TV size (inches) from the screen. Translation: If your television is 36 the viewer should be sitting at a minimum of 54 inches from the screen and at a maximum of 108 inches. You do not want to be too close to a HDTV screen as they are designed to be viewed from certain distances. Sitting too close will make you question your HDTV picture quality and also lead to some serious eye strain. If you sit too far from your screen your eyes cannot appreciate the level of detail as they will not be able to resolve the full resolution of the screen. Sitting too far will also sacrifice the "immersion" feeling your HDTV screen is meant to provide. I highly suggest sitting somewhere in the middle of the recommended viewing range. This should be ample sizing information for any home video/audio enthusiast.

Step 3: How to select the proper TV mount? All things considered.

Selecting the proper TV mount is not difficult at all. There are a few different styles out there to choose from. The first type of mount I will discuss are the Low Profile TV Mounts, they are also referred to as flat mounts or flush mounts. These mounts have no range of motion and hold your television screen about 1 inch from the wall. These are perfect for people that are looking for a very low profile and sleek look for their HDTV screen. These mounts will keep your television flush to wall and minimize wasted space in tight areas or small rooms. It is important to note, with Low Profile TV Mounts, you will most likely need to remove the TV from the mount to attach/detach cables.

The next type of mount is the Tilt TV Mount. Tilt mounts do exactly what the name implies, they allow the screen to pitch downward for situations where you need the screen mounted higher than viewing level on the wall. Examples of when these mounts come in handy are retail stores, board rooms or bedrooms for when you want a nice viewing angle while lying down. Different models have varied ranges of motion, the average mount provides 15 to 20 degrees of tilt, usually more than enough to meet people's needs. Mounts with further tilt are available, just be sure to check the specifications before buying.

The third and final mount to be discussed is the Swivel TV Mount, also referred to as articulating mounts or cantilever mounts. Swivel mounts have the ability to extend the TV away from the wall and rotate the screen in either direction. The typical swivel mount can allow the TV to sit anywhere from 5 to 20 inches from wall and rotate approximately 60 degrees in either direction. Most swivel mounts also allow for around 15 - 20 degrees of tilt much like a Tilt Mount. I highly recommend Swivel Mounts for those who want the most flexibility and customization of optimal viewing angles. They are perfect for those who require maximum adjustability of their Flat Screen TV. Tilt and Swivel Mounts are also ideal for those constantly connecting different wires to the TV as they allow some work room behind the screen.

Now that you have a style of mount in mind you need to consider the size screen. When purchasing a mount you will notice they can accommodate a range of TV sizes. How is this so? Most mountable HDTV's conform to agreed specifications set by the Video Electronics Standards Association or more commonly known as VESA. VESA refers mostly to the hole mounting pattern on the TV and mount. Most mounts and TV's will conform to this standard but be sure to double check before purchasing. What if you already purchased a television that is not VESA compatible? No problem! There are many commercially available adapter plates which allow you to mount your television to VESA compatible mounts. What does this all mean you ask? Basically, TV's of many sizes will have the same hole configuration on the rear of the screen to make finding and installing a mount as painless as possible.

The weight of your TV is also important. The weight of your screen can most commonly be found in the instruction manual or on the box, sometimes it can also be found on the rear of the screen. If all else fails it should be listed on the manufacturers website. When browsing for mounts they will usually give you a maximum weight they can safely accommodate. Do not EVER exceed the maximum recommended weight! Worst case scenario your screen rips out of the wall and falls to the floor leaving you with a broken TV and holes in your wall. If your TV is within 20 pounds of the maximum weight I always recommend going with a beefier mount with a higher weight rating. The maximum weight guidelines do not take into account the weight of the wires plugged into the back of the TV screen. The weight or tension of the wires is not negligible! Most people have anywhere from 2 to 14 wires plugged into the back of your screen, this additional load adds up. Do not forget people may be tempted to touch or lean on the screen, you even exert force when tilting/swiveling it to a new position. If your within 20 pounds of the maximum weight consider getting the beefier mount, the extra few bucks spent here may save you hundreds in the long run.

Step 4: Installing the TV mount.

This article is only to be used as a general guide, always follow supplied instructions. When deciding how high to mount your TV, the best viewing angle is always straight on (eye level). If you were to draw a horizontal line across the middle of your TV (don't actually draw a line on your screen), this line should correspond to the eye level of your viewers. In the case of Tilt Mounts, you can mount the screen even higher and tilt the screen to compensate for the height. The first step should be to identify a section of wall suitable for the mount. I never recommend installing TV mounts into drywall alone, regardless of the weight! Drywall cannot support the weight of your screen and will easily break causing your set to fall to the floor. Your best bet is to identify a stud (wooden beam) behind the drywall that you can screw into. Mounts can also be installed into brick and concrete, these installs are rather simple as you do not need to worry about finding studs, the brick/concrete is sturdy enough on its own to hold the weight. Always make sure your mounting hardware penetrates into the stud. If your home/office makes use of metal framework instead of wooden studs, I recommend commonly available toggle bolts. They can be found at a local hardware store or online. Environmental factors should be considered as well. There has been a recent trend to hanging flatscreens above the fireplace. While this looks nice, the temperature fluctuations have shown to decrease TV performance and even to damage the screen. It can be done however, but first verify the wall/chimney above the fireplace does not have temperature fluctuations of more than 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Trace amounts of smoke can also lead to discoloration over time. The same thing goes for baseboard heat and radiators. Make sure the TV is far enough away that it is not subject to extreme temperature fluctuations.

The final step before drilling is to pencil the mounting holes on the wall. You want to make absolutely sure they are level. You can use a wall level or simply measure up from the floor and make sure the distances are equal. Take the time to do the measurements now, an un-level installation will result in a crooked TV, no good! This can be very difficult to correct and detrimental to your dry wall as you will have to re-screw. Just as dad always said, "measure twice, drill once." If you are not "hardware/construction" savvy or familiar with the construction of your home, you should consider investing in a stud finder. Most Stud finders will identify metal and wood beams you can anchor into, the one I featured will also indicate the presence of live electrical wiring. Never drill into a wall if you are unsure whether there is live electrical wiring or plumbing behind it! If you are unsure, confused or not very confident at this point I suggest you spend the money on a professional installation. They can be done rather cheaply and most companies do very good work. For inexperienced people, the cost of the drill, wall level and various other tools may be more expensive than a professional installation. If you have no budget, gather whatever sized paper you can find, then trim to size with scissors and a straight edge (a ruler or book edge will do fine.) Those with a budget can purchase a decorative stationery sheets or printer paper, even with special occasion or other holiday borders. You can search your favorite engine on line for scrap booking supplies, check out office supply stores, dime stores and discount or outlet stores.
Next get creative: gather together photos and other mementoes you are saving, stickers, colored pencils and markers, corners (that hold photos in place), tape, glue, glitter, ribbons, fabric swatches and any other fun crafting materials you can think of in a shoebox or other storage container.
Then relax, turn on your favorite tunes, and begin. Focus on one page at a time of your memory book. Choose a focal point - like one main photo or photo grouping. Margaret's Story - At First I Feel Anxious

I called Beverly because I'm feeling stuck. I've decided to clean out those piles of paper in my house, but hey, I'm only human. I know other people can just clean those piles of paper with no problem, but it's stressful for me. I think I stress myself out whenever I have to go through ANY type of change. Changing those piles and throwing away stuff is, well, a change. I feel afraid of change. Anyway, I think the habit of disliking change is how I'm making myself feel so worried. But I'm getting lots better. I've learned that if I focus on what I CAN do, I feel a lot less worried.

We Discuss How Margaret Can Improve Her Situation

So Margaret and I talk about how brave she is to even consider cleaning out those piles of paper. Margaret says, "Brave? Me?" I say, "Sure you're brave. You are facing your anxiety, looking for a way to resolve it. You are focusing on what you CAN do. You are feeling like you're ready for a change. In my opinion, you're brave."

"Well, okay, I guess. Yes." says Margaret.

And I say, "You're more interested in being able to get around in your house than you are in leaving the papers piled up."

"Right. I'm brave." Says Margaret, reminding herself that she feels brave facing her worry.

Now Margaret and I continue to discuss her cleaning out the paper piles. I ask her, "When you actually start cleaning out the paper piles, what is the first easy thing you're going to do?"

"Well, I'm going to imagine being able to walk around in the house easier AND that I'm doing it because I CHOOSE to do it for me."

"Hey, I like that one." says Beverly. "You're doing it because you choose to do it for you. What's another easy thing you can do to get things done?"

"Sometimes I distract myself. So, maybe if I write my goal on paper and keep looking at the paper, I can use it like a roadmap. I'll look at the paper with the goal "cleaning up paper piles to have more walking around room in the house" and stay focused on the benefit to me." Tom and Barbara were two people determined to do things their own way. Tom had quit his job and gone to work for himself, not as a self-employed contractor or consultant, but as a self-reliant person. So far, they had succeeded in mapping out a game plan, and gotten a nice size garden laid out. This garden served two purposes: give them food to eat, and food to sell. It took a bit of trying, but Tom was finally able to persuade the local grocers to use them as a source of produce for their markets. This gave Tom and Barbara money to put back into the growth of their self-reliant lifestyle.

Their next focus in The Plan was water. They needed water for themselves as well as for their garden, and when they started to add livestock and chickens to their mix, those critters would need water, too. For Tom and Barbara, water was of vital importance, not just to drink, but also to bathe in and cook with. It was, essential, therefore, for Tom to get going on this part of their plan.

After a bit of thought, Tom and Barbara both realized that they knew next to nothing about water and self reliance. They knew that they would need to store water on their property, not just for emergencies, but for use in their self reliance plans. They decided to implement a combination of emergency preparedness advice and self reliance. This is what they did.

They learned that for every person in their household, in this case, just the two of them, they needed two gallons of water per person, per day. This would amount to about fifty-six gallons of water to set aside for an emergency. What they would do would be to store this water in five gallon containers for easy storage, because each five gallon container would weigh forty pounds when full of water, making them easy to move around and keep. They would store them in new containers, not used, to avoid contamination. They also learned to stay away from metal containers that could rust or get things in them that could make Tom and Barbara sick.

They would keep this water stored for one month. At the end of this month, they would use money earned from their garden surplus to purchase more water to replace their storage, and rotate the older water out to the garden and eventually the livestock. They would in the meantime purchase enough water to use on the garden between storage rotation. Tom realized this wasn't exactly total self reliance, but he had learned that gathering rainwater was not exactly legal where he lived. He wasn't sure why, but he felt certain that it was just Uncle Sam struggling to keep hold of people just wanting to be let go.

This would work for now, Tom and Barbara decided. When it rained, so be it. Their garden would delight in the thirst quencher storm. So would Tom and Barbara. Until a better way of being totally independent of the municipal stranglehold on the private collecting and usage of water outside their control, this was it. If they lived in the country, they could possibly have dug a well, but they lived in the city. Someday...

Now, Barbara reminded her husband, what about that chicken coop?

"I'm getting to it," Tom intoned. "Don't rush me."

Sure, Barbara thought. At least they were getting somewhere. She paused a moment to scan their little plot of land, pleased at her garden spanning the yard, already planted for another season. Their water storage was placed in a safe place under an overhang by the side of the house, under a tarp. She was pleased with what she saw. Soon, she realized, she would be able to quit her job. There debts were almost paid, and the grocers were coming to rely on them more for their produce. Will it be enough?

Inform guests in their invites as to whether to plan to drive or take a cab. If you want a large crown molding, but don't really want to pay that huge price, just get some colonial baseboard and attach it to the ceiling and the wall, make sure that they are butted together bottom to bottom and then attach your smaller crown over them and you will have a large crown for a cheaper price.

Hardwood trim is better than softwood, Hardwood has great grain patterns where softwood grain can tend to be tight. Softwood (pine) will bleed out resin and leave your stain or paint with blisters.

Always look and make sure that the trim you are working with has a back relief on the back, this will help the trim settle over time. The back relief allows the trim and molding to shape to the surface it is being applied to, otherwise if there is no back relief the wood will twist and warp and possibly start to crack.

Q: Last question - what other types of woodworking do you do or can you use in a home?

We do just about anything that can be made out of wood. This includes items such as bathroom vanities, solid panel doors, and more. Bring Focus To Your Stained Glass

Patinas are used to color or darken solder lines. The most common patina colors are black and copper. Using patinas brings the focus on the glass and the design of your stained glass piece. This makes the glass colors, textures and designs of the stained glass piece the main focus.

Before you apply patinas, be sure all flux residues is removed. This can be done using a commercial flux remover or washing the stained glass piece with dish soap and baking soda.

Steps for Applying Patinas

o Use a brush, rag or cotton ball to dab patina on to the zinc frame. Do not use a brushing action, as this can leave streaking or patchy coverage.

o Next, apply patina to solder lines. Be sure all edges of solder lines have been covered.

o Then, turn project over and repeat the process on that side.

o Lastly, thoroughly rinse the patina off the stained glass piece. After it is completely dry, a minimum of 24hours, finishing compound can be applied.

Tips and techniques for Applying Patinas

o Safety - Always wear rubber gloves when applying patina.

o If patina appears spotty, use super fine steel wool to clean the area, and then re-apply the patina.

o To avoid oxidation, clean and apply patina immediately after project is soldered.

While patina will mask some inconsistencies in you solder lines, others will still be noticeable and take away from the professional look of your piece. With patience, practice and the correct tools and supplies, you can have professional solder lines.

Most patinas come in an 8 oz bottle. Avoid contaminating the liquid in the bottle by never re-dipping your applicator back into the bottle. Pour out a lid full and use this as your re-dip point.

You may experience different end results with the use of different brands of patinas. One common brand and easily found on store shelves and on line is Novacan. It is available in different formulas for different metals i.e. lead vs. zinc. As you experiment with different brands, you will notice that the more expensive ones do seem to shine more. Sometimes simple wax and compound can help this situation too.

Usually, if need be, patinas can be removed by using steel wool and some elbow grease. So don't fret if you think the application has made your art work look bad or if you just don't like the shiny lines dark.

I was not a fan of most patinas; however, I now know that by using this product, you do experience brilliant colorful glass. All attention is quickly turned from solder lines to the subject of your glass creation - the glass.

Another note of concern applies to patinas as well as other chemicals used in stained glass production. That is evaporation. Be sure and keep the lids tightly screwed on your bottles of supplies as some do seem to disappear into thin air. This will also avoid waste if tipped over accidentally.

A focus group is when you get paid to sit down with other people who are also getting paid and discuss new products or services.

You never want to give your own recommendations. That is not why you are hired. If the mystery shopping company wants a consultant, they will hire one. All they want you to do is to answer questions with just the facts of your mystery shopping assignment.

It's great if you have children since Fieldwork does a lot of focus groups involving children. Perhaps you can talk your kids into splitting the fee with you. Again, the pay usually works out to be about $50 to $75 an hour.

5 Preschool Activities For Grandparents Day

As with most holidays, school will use Grandparents Day as a special activity for the class. This can be especially true of preschool, where there is as much focus on social activity and every day life as there is on learning the functionalities of reading, writing, and arithmetic. However, with so many different holidays to plan activities and crafts for, you may be out of ideas for Grandparents Day. Have no fear; there is always something new and different to try.

If your preschool has a high level of parental involvement, you may have your preschoolers create family trees. While these don’t have to be long and detailed, they can trace the immediate family and the grandparents. It can also be made creative, actually drawing a tree with branches that reach to each family member.

You can also have your students create Grandparents Day “gift bags”. Make the bag as much a part of the gift as what it contains by having your students color paper lunch bags. Then, fill it with a hand-crafted greeting card for the holiday and perhaps things like a colored picture or a couple of pieces of candy.

One fun idea, if you have the time and patience, is to have the children put on a show. They could act out a scene depicting children showing respect and thanks to the elderly or even sing to their grandparents. Having these respected members of society visit the classroom could be a very special event and could make the elderly feel useful. At the same time, perhaps the children’s grandparents could visit and tell stories from their youth, read books, or even just answer questions about the “olden days”.

With signed permission slips, you may plan a field trip to a nursing home, where the children can greet the lonely elderly and wish them a happy Grandparents Day at a time when there is no one else to bring such a pleasant message to their lives.

Or, you could simply plan an arts and crafts activity that will create a cute gift for the childrens' grandparents on this special holiday.

What Nationally Published Columnist, Cindy Laferle Has To Say About Writing & Journalism

Today Norm Goldman, Editor of sketchandtravel and bookpleasures is honored to have as a guest, the nationally published newspaper columnist and author, Cindy LaFerle. Cindy recently published a book entitled, Writing Home, a collection of essays focusing on home, family and motherhood.

Cindy was at one time editor of a national travel magazine, the Innsider that focused on country inns, B&Bs, and small historic hotels in the USA.

She was also responsible for helping Uncle Ben´s (the rice company) launch its annual Best Country Inns award.

Good day Cindy and thank you for agreeing to participate in our interview.

Norm:

You indicated to me that the Innsider magazine set a standard of quality for smaller inns and B&Bs. Please explain.

Cindy:

Back in the early 1980s, when Innsider was newly launched, smaller historic inns and B&Bs were relatively new to the average American traveler.

They´d been popular for many years in Europe, as you know, Norm, but most Americans were not as comfortable with the idea of staying in small inn or B&B 20 years ago. The old term guest house had negative, seedy connotations and in some cases, that reputation was justified. Those little "Mom and Pop" guest houses weren´t typically AAA rated or listed in guidebooks back then, and sometimes there was a very good reason for that.

That old reputation was hard for the GOOD B&Bs and country inns to conquer at first, since the average traveler was more comfortable at, say, a Holiday Inn.

Even so, charming B&Bs and country inns were indeed catching on with sophisticated travelers who were familiar with the smaller inns of Europe --but those travelers really had to work hard to research the quality of American B&Bs/country inns. There weren´t as many inn guidebooks back then, either, although COUNTRY INNS & BACK ROADS, by Norm Simpson, were in print
and highly regarded.

That´s where Innsider came into play. We didn´t establish ratings
per se, but we sought out the BEST places we could find, featuring only those that were clean, well-run, attractive and historically interesting. We didn´t feature anything that was sub-standard and therefore set the bar high for other small inns that wanted to attract business. We also worked with professional inn organizations to improve and help standardize the quality of these small inns -- without sacrificing the personality and uniqueness that make them so special. As editor of Innsider, I attended with my staff many conferences for small innkeepers and spoke about what made a first-class B&b or country inn. It was great fun.

Norm:

You also mentioned that you worked as a free lance inspector for
Michigan´s Lake Bed & Breakfast Association. What did you exactly do and perhaps you can elaborate as to what are the ingredients required to have a top quality B&B.

Cindy:

This association was founded to promote high standards for
Michigan´s smaller inns, and I was asked to help establish those. I was part of a small team who were to inspect the member inns. We looked for things such as overall cleanliness in the common rooms and baths; amenities such as tissues, fresh sheets, good lighting for reading, and so on. We made sure that kitchens were exceptionally clean and that breakfasts offered were substantial and/or reflected was advertised. That sort of thing. We had PAGES of items to examine or discuss with the innkeepers on the inspection lists, so I could go on and on. It was all about quality and upgrading the smaller inn for the comfort of guests. If the inn didn´t pass inspection, it lost membership and listing in the state guide.

Norm:

What is your idea of an ideal romantic inn or B&B, and do you have any favorite romantic inns or B&Bs?

Cindy:

That´s a tough question, but I think a romantic inn needs to be
one-of-a-kind and superbly appointed it should be beautifully decorated and offer a few special things you wouldn´t find in other hotels or at home.... special touches like fancy sheets, larger and lovely bathrooms with good toiletries, comfy chairs and space for reading and relaxing together.

An in-room fireplace is always nice.

Local color is important. The romantic inn should also be located
near a wonderful restaurant and other attractions like good shopping or historic sites and recreational activities. I like to be located in a historic district, say, like Savannah or Charleston, in a gorgeous inn that´s within walking distance of a town.

Here in Michigan, there´s a secluded, charming place called the
Victorian Villa (Union City, Michigan). Staying there is an experience in and of itself, even if you never leave the grounds. Everything is authentically Victorian, exquisite and historic, including the building itself. Innkeeper Ron Gibson stages Victorian theme weekends and teas, including a Sherlock Holmes Mystery Weekend, which are seasonal and make it
a special occasion to stay there. It´s just beautiful and the rooms are large you are staying in a mansion that feels like a Victorian home.

Norm:

How did you become a travel writer, and how did your experience as a travel writer give you a wonderful background for the kind of work you do now?

Cindy:

I started out (some 20 years ago) as a freelance features writer for my local paper, and had written a few stories about B&Bs (because I´d always stayed in them and enjoyed them). The photographer, who was newly hired to work for Innsider, approached me and told me that the publisher was looking
for an editor who had some knowledge of B&Bs/small inns and could work part-time as editor-in-chief. My son was a baby then, so the flexibility appealed to me, as did the subject matter & although as the magazine grew, it was not as flexible and involved a lot of travel, which was harder to manage with a family.

But during the nearly 6 years I worked for Innsider, I got a chance to see MANY wonderful historic places in this country, and I learned so much. Travel is essential, I believe, for every writer, no matter what genre they prefer.

And, as corny and clichéd as it sounds here, I also learned there´s no place like home. Travel broadens your perspective and also teaches you to be grateful for what you have. Traveling down south for the magazine, for example, we often drove through some very economically depressed areas en route to the historic inns and Civil War battlegrounds we were going to cover and photograph. Things like that stay with you, sometimes even more
than the beauty you find on the way.

Norm:

Could you tell us something about your recently published book, Writing Home, and why you wanted to write the book.

Cindy:

After Innsider folded due to lack of ad revenue I decided to
work from home and spend more time with my son, who was barely 6 and growing up way too fast. I didn´t want to miss any of that, so I managed to get some freelance jobs writing for local papers as well as national magazines.

That´s when I found I had a knack for writing personal essays and
"slice of life newspaper columns. I found a comfortable niche for myself in that genre. Writing Home is a collection of those short pieces. While they are personal essays, they all chronicle some of the universal themes that touch many of us learning how to let go of children as they grow up; learning how to be a family; watching parents age and die; dealing with midlife crisis in the meantime....One reporter said my pieces were about
finding the sacred in the suburban, and I think that´s a good way to explain my stuff and my new book.

Norm:

What makes a good journalist, and do you find that today a great deal of journalism is pure and simple sensationalism.

Cindy:

I am really saddened at what has happened with journalism today.
Yes, I do think a lot of what´s sold as "news" is often sensationalized to the point where average readers no longer trust what they read anymore.

Readers often tell me that newspapers, for the most part, are very depressing -- and that the top stories make them lose faith in our world. A lot of front-page news makes people feel angry and hopeless. Bad news seems to inspire more bad news, but that is what "sells" papers.
I have tried, at various times, to pitch hopeful stories to various editors because I think there are MANY wonderful things going on in our communities that don´t get press. But you know what? I have been told that people don´t really want to read good news, and that good news doesn´t sell papers. How else can we explain the success of those awful, cheesy tabloids that sell like hotcakes in the grocery store checkout lines, for example?

That said, Norm, I want to point out there are a few papers that are as objective as humanly possible, run by editors who believe in the dignity of the world and the intelligence of their readers. The Christian Science Monitor is one such paper. (I am not employed by them, but I have published several pieces in the CSM). It continues to be well-regarded by readers and
other journalists who aim high.

Norm:

What advice would you give to anyone who wishes to pursue a career in journalism or travel writing?

Cindy:

You have to be willing to write for smaller markets, just to get
started. You won´t get into the bigger magazines or newspaper right away, so you need to focus on building a clip file published pieces that show you can write and have a sense for what makes a good travel piece. It takes time and diligence, and a lot of writers give up because it is competitive and the pay isn´t so great. Sometimes you have to be pleased just to get a
byline, which is sad but true. Budgets are being cut right and left at newspapers these days, and the first things to be cut are the lifestyles pieces.

If you can put up with this situation and are willing to pay your
dues and start small, you´ve got a chance. I got started in my local daily, with a circ of less than 20,000, and eventually was able to publish my work in Reader´s Digest and other national publications. Keep at it -- and enjoy the process. Ask yourself if you really want to write, or you just want to be published -- there´s a huge difference!

Norm:

When you write your various columns, what do you wish to achieve?

Cindy:

I want to make a heartfelt connection to my readers. I want them to feel less alone as they try to make sense of the very complicated lives we are all living &. If someone tells me that they related to a piece I wrote, or that they felt like I was really telling their story well, then I have hit the mark and done my job.

Norm:

Where do your ideas come from?

Cindy:

Ideas come from everyday life, from paying attention to what is around me. I think all writers have to be, in a way, Zen masters. If you are not focused on what is happening around you if you´re always thinking about the next thing on your to-do list -- you are not going to write anything that hits
people where they live.

Norm:

Creating the Perfect Closet

Your closet is often the first thing you see in the morning, and its condition can determine your mood for the day. There is something about an orderly closet that makes a person feel stylish and in-control. But digging through a cluttered closet, trying to find a matching outfit can dampen even the brightest of spirits. Not a very good way to start the day!

WHAT'S IN YOUR CLOSET?

The road to organization begins with an honest evaluation of your wardrobe. Is your closet filled with clothes that don't fit, are out of style, or haven't been worn in the last year? They're out of here! Are you guilty of owning a garment that you can't wear because it doesn't go with a single thing in your closet? Make a decision right here and now -- either find something to match that cool paisley shirt or get rid of it.

Now separate out any pieces that need to be mended or cleaned. You may want to put a couple of labeled baskets in your closet for regular laundry, dry cleaning, and alterations. Try not to hang anything in your closet that is not CURRENTLY WEARABLE. And if you want to keep your closet under control, plan to purge your wardrobe every few months. Now that you have pared down, let's set up your closet so that you know where everything is:

BY SEASON

Start by separating your clothes into "fall / winter" and "spring / summer" items. Make sure to do the same with your accessories, lingerie, and outerwear, as well. How does your wardrobe balance out? Do you have a closet full of summer clothes, but only 3 winter outfits? That's okay for someone who lives in South Florida -- but if your home is above the Mason-Dixon line, it's time to go shopping! If you find that you are short on space in your bedroom closet, consider storing the off-season in another part of the house. A spare bedroom closet or portable armoire in the attic might be the perfect answer. Just be aware of climatic concerns and guard against insect infestations -- especially when storing wool clothing.

BY CLOTHING TYPE

Now, you will want to sort through the current season's clothes, creating logical categories based on the way that you normally think about your wardrobe. You can arrange your clothes according to PURPOSE, breaking out formal, work, and casual outfits. Or, you could organize by TYPE -- grouping jackets separate from blouses separate from pants. And in either situation, it's always good to create different categories for each STYLE of clothing -- such as storing short-sleeve shirts in one place and long-sleeve in another. Whichever method you choose, clearly delineate your categories -- either put labeled divider discs on your rod (like the ones used in department stores) or assign each section to a different part of the closet.

BY OUTFIT

I am an inherently lazy person. I don't want to spend time deciding what blouse goes with which pants, so I hang entire outfits together. What a time-saver! Of course, if you like to mix and match, this system may not be the best choice. If you do go this route, consider labeling each hanger with a list of accessories that accompany that particular garment. Feel free to include any small items, such as scarves or belts, right on the hanger with the outfit. One client of mine (who loves hanging her clothes in outfits) came up with a creative organizing idea -- she has a pair of earrings that only go with her navy suit, so she clips them right on the lapel!

BY COLOR

The final step is to organize each section of clothing by color. Going from light to dark, group items of the same hue together. You don't have to create a scientifically accurate color spectrum -- just generally group reds and pinks in one place, blues all together, etc. Now, when you need a black blouse, they will all be hanging in the same place. This will also allow you to see excesses and deficiencies in your wardrobe. One woman I worked with told me that organizing by color was the dumbest thing she had ever heard of -- until she tried it! She never knew she owned 12 different red T-shirts until re-arranging her closet. She also swears this technique saves her 20 minutes getting ready each morning!

The Advantages of Wall Mountable Stereos

However, since most audio experts agree that placing the stereo in corner of a room gives you optimum sound quality, you can kill two birds with one stone. When the stereo is in a corner, the sound waves reflect against the walls, the floor, and the ceiling of the corner it is in. So you can see how this can work in your favor.

Also, when you're mounting your stereo against the wall, keep in mind that you should place it at a convenient height. You'll want make sure that you can access it easily with your remote control. Before you find a location for it, you should also take into account that curtains, carpets, and other items, can absorb sound and thus create a muffling effect.

Buying wall mountable stereo shelves

When buying wall mountable stereo shelves, you can buy shelves made specifically for stereos or simply choose to focus on your basic wall mountable shelf. These can come in variety of styles, ranging from classical to modern. They also come in a variety of materials, ranging from plastic to wood.

Fireplace Insert Ideas

While it is true that a fireplace insert is great for bringing life back to that old traditional or gas fireplace you have sitting dormant in the living room, a fireplace insert can do so much more for your home. If you have ever looked around your home and wondered how much it would cost to put a fireplace in a certain wall, room or area, you will be surprised when you hear the answer.

While construction and labor costs for a traditional or gas fireplace can cost upwards of ten thousand dollars, you can actually have a fireplace built for merely hundreds if you use a fireplace insert and some materials from your local hardware store. Now, I can't deny that it is nice to have a wall mounted gas fireplace that lights with a simple remote. But, a wall mounted gel fireplace can be installed in merely hours for thousands of dollars less.

So when you think about the fireplace insert when you think about new fireplace construction, you have possibilities that literally will never end. I have written reports, DIYs, articles and plenty of blog posts about most of the possibilities. It's hard not to mention such unique areas as in the bathroom, bedroom, office, and dining room. Those are rooms that traditionally don't have fireplaces even though a more contemporary trend has been to build certain types in these rooms. But, we can stretch our imaginations for some fireplace ideas that transcend even those.

The Corner Fireplace
Traditionally, fireplaces go in the center of the wall. But, we have evolved into forward thinking visionaries. We are no longer limited by the way things have always been. We put fireplaces in the corner. With a fireplace insert and some building supplies, you can have a fireplace that is more unique than the one your best friend has. You can either learn how to do it yourself, because it is completely safe when you use a fireplace insert with gel fuel, or you can ask a friend of yours to help you. It's that easy.

Middle of the Room
Why have it along the wall? Why have it in the corner, even though that is a great idea? Why not put a fireplace in the middle of the room? You hardly need any supplies from the hardware store. Build a simple brick or rock structure for your fireplace insert and you have the neatest indoor fireplace you have ever seen.

If you have a sitting arrangement where you have made it possible for people to pretty much focus on one point, then you have a great place for a fireplace. It's just like arranging a room around a television. Only this time, it's a different room where no fireplace exists. It's just a nice place to talk and enjoy each other's company with a fireplace...in the middle of the room.

Back Yard
That's right! Take it outside. Enjoy the fireplace experience in your backyard. Put it on the patio or your deck. Anywhere you think you would like to have some company, build yourself a nice fireplace. Of course, you can get a little more involved with the fireplace construction and build yourself a nice rock or brick structure to house your fireplace insert. Let it stand about six feet tall if you want. It's up to you. Learn how to build it and your company will come.

Those are all great ideas. But, give your own home some thought. If you have an area, any area that you think would look nice with a fireplace, chances are you are right. The only stupid place for a fireplace, is that place where there isn't one yet.

Declutter - It is Time to Be Picky

Clutter is all around us. Have you noticed that almost everyone has a cell phone up to their head while driving these days? Multi-tasking can be a good thing but can also be too much of a good thing. Constantly trying to cram just one more thing into your day causes stress and leads to anxiety.

Doing too many things at one time can also mean that none of those things are getting done well. Have you found yourself forgetting things lately? Do you find the simplest task can be overwhelming? The mind can only function with all this stress for a short time. When it gets overloaded, it has to have some relief. If you don't provide some respite from the overload, it will get creative and start to declutter on its own.

I have found myself at times starting to forget the simplest things. The first thing I start to forget is names. Does that happen to you? It can be very frustrating. For me, that is my first warning that I need to de-stress. It is helpful to just lean back in your seat, or sit down if you are standing. Take three deep breaths. Focus on your breathing and center your thoughts on your physical state. If you are where you can safely do so, bring your thoughts back into the core of your being.

Be conscious of your surroundings and take a moment to mentally organize your thoughts. What is the most important thing you need to do right now? Can you do that one thing first and then move onto the next? Take a pen and paper and list the things you need to do and then number them in the order of their importance. Are there some things you can eliminate? Try making some time for yourself today. It will help you be more productive in both your professional and personal life. It is time to pick out the things that you really want to do instead of what you feel being lke you are supposed to do. Your well being may be at stake here.

Repairing Putty Window Glass

Have you ever thought about fixing a broken window in your house, but didn't think you could do it because nobody ever taught you how to cut glass? Well, you really don't have to know how to cut glass in order to repair your window. If you knew how to remove the frame, you could order a replacement piece of glass from your local glass shop already cut to the proper size. Then, it's just a matter of installing the new glass into the frame. But, there are so many different kinds of window out there, there is no way i could explain them all in one article. So, this is going to be the first in a series of articles describing the repair procedure for each type of window.

There are really two categories of windows out there. They are single pane windows and dual pane windows. Then, within those two categories, there are several types of windows in each category. Let's start with the single pane window category. This would be older windows that were around before the building industry became more energy conscious. It just means that there is a single piece of glass in the frame that surrounds it. A lot of homeowners mistakenly think a horizontal sliding window must be a double pane window, since there is a pane of glass in the sliding panel and another pane in the stationary panel. The terminology refers to the number of panes in the sliding or fixed panel alone. In other words, a single pane horizontal sliding window has a single pane of glass in the sliding panel, and a single pane in the fixed panel. A double pane slider would actually have two pieces of glass in both the sliding panel and fixed panel. The pieces in each panel are separated by approximately 3/8" of air, and have a metal spacer around the edge of the glass.

So, let's get back to the single pane repairs. One of the more common types of single pane windows are the type that uses putty to hold the glass in the frame. All old wood windows are done this way. Old metal casement windows are usually done this way as well. The casement window is the kind with the handle on the inside bottom corner that you crank, and the window opens outward on a top and bottom pivot. Let's focus this article on the putty style replacements.

Before you begin, pick a local glass shop in your area where you will go to pick up the new glass. Make sure they are going to be open the day you do the work, and confirm with them that if you call in an order for a pane of glass in the morning, you can pick it up in an hour or two. You dont want to remove the glass from the window frame, then find out the glass shop won't have your glass cut until next week. If they can't guarantee a two hour turnaround, keep looking.

The fastest and easiest way to remove the old glass is to break it out. Put an old sheet or a tarp on the ground below the window. Then, put on some gloves. Use gloves with a material that will prevent a piece of glass from cutting your hands. A pair of gardening gloves should work fine. Get yourself a pair of safety glasses as well. Trust me, you don't want to get hit in the eye with a piece of flying glass. As my Father always used to tell me, "Better safe than sorry". Now, go inside with a hammer in hand and knock the glass out of the center part of the window. It's best to leave some glass sticking out around the edge. You can grab the protruding glass and use it as leverage to pop the old putty loose. The more old putty that you can get to come out along with the glass, the less scraping you will have to do. I have done some wood window replacements where the putty was dried and cracked, and it practically fell out on it's own. On the flip side, i have done some where the putty had almost become a part of the wood. The only way to separate the putty from the frame in those instances is to use a putty knife to scrape it down to the wood. While removing the putty, you will find little pieces of metal that are used to hold the glass in place while applying the putty. The wood windows use push points, and you can get a package of new ones at the hardware store. If you're working with the metal casement window, the metal clips are called sash clips. You might have a harder time finding these. Frankly, i don't see any problem reusing them.

Once you have all the glass and putty removed, clean the frame with a paint brush. Then measure the width at three spots:bottom, middle, and top. Take the smallest measurement and deduct 1/8" for wood windows and 3/8" for steel casements. Then, measure the height at the left side, center, and right side. Take the smallest measurement and deduct 1/8" on wood windows and 1/4" on casements. When you order your new glass, order double strength glass, and give the width first, then the height. When you get the new glass home, the installation process is slightly different between wood and steel windows. If it's wood, put a thin bead of caulk on the frame where the glass is going to make contact. Install the glass. The caulk will hold the glass in place while you install the push points. You can either apply putty or use white caulk instead. If you're going to use caulk, cut the tip below the tapered part, and cut at a 45 degree angle. You want the largest possible hole to allow the caulk to cover the large area previously covered by the putty. The caulk method is faster than putty, but it requires more skill to make the job look nice. If you have steel casements, the only option is putty. The area is just too large to use caulk. The sash clips install differently than the push points. The push points stick into the wood, but the sash clips insert into small holes in the side of the casement frame. Sometimes the holes get plugged with old putty and it's easy to overlook them. Take your time applying the putty. Make sure you use the putty knife to smooth the surface. You just repaired your putty window.

How to Buy Cotton Quilting Fabric - Part I

Buying quilting fabric seems like it should be pretty simple. And, frankly, when I began quilting, it was simple. At least I made it that way. I wandered through the fabric store and found fabric I liked - the pattern, the color, the design. But generally, I bought fabric just because I liked it.

As a result, my quilting fabric stash included all types of fabrics - polyesters, cotton/polyesters, rayons, and some wools. After a few quilting experiences (some of which were pretty bad), I learned the advantages of different fabrics. Now I look at a few different things when I consider fabrics to buy.

Generally I prefer natural fibers. It's probably a sense of connecting to quilters of yesteryear. Or it may be that a comment made to me years ago about "wrapping a baby in plastic (polyester)" just stuck with me - in a negative sense.

While I prefer natural fibers, I have made some fun quilts that include lame, and an occasional polyester or poly/cotton blend, because it offered some design benefit that I couldn't find in cotton - like a sports logo.

This is one of a series of articles about different types of fabric quilters use in their quilts. For simplicity, I will focus on the natural fibers cotton, wool and silk. I have used them all (although not in the same quilt). So you will get my firsthand experience and observations. Personal opinion as it is.

Since you can go online and find plenty of articles and websites that describe the fascinating way fabric is made and dyed, I'll let them do the describing about that, and I will focus just on what quilters want to know - how will it be working with that type of fabric?

Since 100% cotton fabric is clearly the most popular quilting fabric, let's start there.

There are several specific reasons quilters prefer 100% cotton:

o Cotton is easy to work with. After you sew a seam, you can easily finger press your seam allowances in the direction you want them to go. (That means that your fabric will stay put without pressing it every step along the way.)

o Cotton sticks together while you sew your pieces. Polyester tends to slip and slide, requiring pinning or basting, lest your patches end up being sewn all cockeyed.

o Cotton has a little "give" to it that synthetics don't have. This allows you to pull and tug a bit (as well as bunch it up a little) in order to get the seams to match and make your corners square.

o Cotton breathes. Whether you are making a baby quilt or a bed quilt, 100% cotton fabric will allow air to circulate while capturing the warmth. How this works is just a mystery to me, but it seems to be true.

o Cotton absorbs the dyes better. Maybe it's just me, but I think that the colors are more vibrant and the patterns have more depth.

o Cotton is durable. It has stood the test of time and constant use.

o Cotton can be torn (or ripped). Although this can be a benefit or a drawback, it means that you will be able to determine exactly how the fibers line up. You will be able to "square up" the edge just torn, since it will not rip across the threads.

When Do I Sign the Contract? - Remodeling Tips For Homeowners and Contractors

Okay you've finally found a good contractor and now it's time to sign the contract, but how do you know for sure that you have a good contract. You're not really going to know for sure, until the entire project is completed, but there are a few things that we can do to prevent some problems in the future.

A good contract will have enough information in it the project, scope of work to be provided by the contractor and legal contract clauses. Let's start with the project and the scope of work to be provided by the contractor. This will be a detailed written description of every thing that the contractor is going to do to your construction project or house.

If you're remodeling your bathroom, the construction contract should have model numbers and a good description for your bathtub, toilets, tile, flooring, fixtures and even the paint that you're going to use for your ceilings and walls. Once you have this and you're happy with it, we can focus on the clauses in the contract. Do they make sense to you and do you understand everything that's written in the contract?

If you don't understand something or disagree with something in the contract, explain your situation to the contractor and try to have the construction claws removed. A contract is an agreement between two people, not an agreement between one person who's planning on taking advantage of another person.

A good contract has enough information in it to make both parties happy. If you're not happy with your construction contract, make the necessary changes or find another contractor who's willing to work with you.

Consider how many chickens you are starting with, as well as how many you hope to house in the future. The size of your coop is greatly going to depend on how many chickens you hope to raise. But do not focus on how many you hope to start out with, focus on how many you intend to end up with, because building on to your coop is a lot more challenging than building it in the first place.

Protect you pet poultry, not only from predators but from themselves as well.

Chickens can find themselves getting into some pretty sticky situations if you do not have control over their environment. Also, chickens are especially desirable to predators because they can be easy prey, so make sure they are protected their home, so they can feel safe inside.

You must also consider protecting them from the environments, wind, rain, dampness, humidity, and cold or excessively hot temperatures.

When it comes to poultry house construction, you will not have to worry much about it being difficult or expensive if you simply find a good source for chicken hen house plans. Trust me when I tell you it pay for its self once you realize all the information you would have missed out on if you had not purchased some.

Auto Repair - Charging for Convenience Despite Necessity

Auto repair is a necessity, right? Cars need to be maintained, they need repairs, and they need service. Certainly convenience is nice, but it's an added bonus. One would think that convenience and the necessity of auto repair are indeed complementary - albeit rare. What few understand, however, is that the auto repair industry charges for convenience. In other words, you could and should be able to get your car repaired for less - sometimes lots less - but because you broke down here and not there, you pay more.

Repair prices vary greatly from shop to shop for a numbers of reasons (discussed at length in RepairTrust literature). The focus here is the mind-set in the auto repair industry that it is ok to charge customers extra for convenience.

For perspective, here's a break down of an actual transaction.

After a careful analysis of a $1600 auto repair bill, it was clear that $200 of it was excessive. The excessive charges were as follows: an extra $10 for a battery (compared to MSRP - Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price), an extra $125 for an alternator (compared to MSRP), and an additional $65 in labor (compared to industry guidelines).

OK let's get started! You will probably get your tiles from a DIY store which is fine but do check out the local papers for tile warehouses in your area - they will have much more on display and can offer you good discounts. You should be able to source your adhesive, grout and tools from the same retailer.

You need a 6mm trowel for walls and a 10mm for floors. 4mm for mosaics. You need a tub of ready made adhesive for walls, or ask for the best rapid set mix for your floor. You need 2 empty buckets, a big sponge, a grout float/squeegee, a paddle to mix powders, tape measure, spirit level, a cheap tile cutter: diamond wet cutter and possibly a dry cutter, and a scraper. Check how much all this will cost you and seriously consider if it is worth your purchase: most tilers will charge only a few hundred for an average bathroom or kitchen and then you won't have the tools hanging around after.

The crucial thing is to measure carefully, use your spirit level to get the horizontal lines, work out your pattern in advance and order a good deal more tiles than you think you will need! I start on the line resting on and around the edge of the bath or from a focal point such as below the cooker hood or around a window in the kitchen. The earliest instance of the credit card was known as the shopper's plate, and was typically a store specific charge card made of metal. The main difference between these cards and the credit cards of today is that the outstanding bill was expected to be paid in full at the end of the month. These charge cards were first available in the 1900s but it wasn't until the 1920s that their use became more widespread, as a direct result of the rise of the automobile industry leading to many fuel stations issuing charge cards for travellers to use around the country.

By the 1930s, several retailers had edged towards using "revolving credit", a system by which the card holder could pay balances over time while simultaneously charging new amounts - the main differential between the charge card and the credit card - and the first hint of the retail arrangements that are common today. The first step towards revolving credit was taken by a major department store, which extended its period of repayment to four months, although they did not allow any credit purchases until the outstanding bill was paid off in full. True revolving credit did not appear until the 1940s when department stores began using the facility in conjunction with their store cards.

With the rise in popularity of the credit card came a changing attitude across the United States towards debt. Instead of limiting debt to things that were essential and facilitating the need to save up for luxury items, it became more culturally acceptable for people to go into debt for things that they wanted, rather than needed.

October brings with it not just a fun holiday, but also some unpleasant bugs that may invade your home. The pests we will focus on this month all have in common their tendency to bite humans and even draw blood. The four pests of October to look out for include: bed bugs, mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs feed on mostly human blood, by puncturing the skin with their elongated beaks. While their bites can be a rude awakening in the middle of the night, it has never been proven that bed bugs actually carry disease-causing pathogens, at least in the United States.

Bed bugs spread through clothing and baggage of travelers and through secondhand beds, bedding, furniture and laundry. Experts believe that the cause for the rise in bed bugs are due to an increase in global travel and mobility, the banning of DDT along with reduced use of urban pesticides. In fact, about a year ago, a wide-scale bedbug epidemic enveloped New York City. While the bed bug threat is not a red flag in Texas, homeowners should employ control methods to keep them from hiding in mattresses, clothing, and/or other bedding.

Control Bed Bugs

First, you must know where the bed bugs are hiding in order to remove them. Once you know where they are, improve sanitation by vacuuming or removing the bugs by hand. Depending on your situation, you may need to treat the infested area with an insecticide approved for this use and specifically for bed bug control. Spray or dust bed slats, springs, frame, and other hiding places in the room. Do not use any insecticide on a mattress unless the product label specifically gives directions for this use.

It is impossible to cover all bed bug hiding places, so control is not immediate. You may see living bugs for a week to ten days after application. After this timeframe, you can apply a second treatment to kill the newly hatching bugs. The pesticides used for bed bug control have a short residual life, and so this second application is always needed.

Some additional prevention/control methods include:

Store all your accessible food in rodent-proof containers such as glass or metal

Bag up all clothing in plastic garbage bags, which must be sealed airtight.

Dry-clean garments. Chemicals in dry-cleaning can kill bedbugs; washers and dryers will kill them only at temperatures above 140 degrees Farenheit.

Bag books, papers, pictures, most loose objects and contents of closets to exterminators have access to all cracks and crevices in the home.

Mosquitoes

While bed bugs do not carry diseases, mosquitos are a whole other story. Besides the annoyance factor, mosquitoes can also transmit many disease-causing organisms to humans and animals. Mosquito Control

The TX Cooperative Extension provides many ways to prevent mosquitos from invading your home and biting you and your family:

Eliminate breeding sites for larvae

Reduce standing water that provides breeding sites. Eliminate containers such as old tires, buckets, cans and bottles that collect and hold rainwater and become good breeding sites for mosquitoes. Drain water from flower pots, bird baths, rain gutters, rain barrels, birdbaths, pet dishes, livestock watering troughs, etc. at least once a week.

Empty your plastic wading pool weekly and store it indoors when not in use.

Fill holes or depressions in trees with sand or mortar, or drain them after each rain by drilling holes into the tree.

Repair leaky pipes and outside faucets.

Reduce adult mosquito populations

Mow tall grass or reduce the amount of brush and other foliage in your area to reduce the resting sites for adult mosquitoes.
For temporary relief in yards or high traffic areas, use fog treatments or surface treatments of insecticides that are labeled for that use and apply them following directions on the product label. Avoid contact with mosquitoes.
Use screening in your homes and pet kennels. Keep the screens in good repair and be sure that they seal around the frames of the door or window.
Schedule outdoor activities during times when mosquitoes are not active. Mosquito species that are active at dusk and dawn can often be avoided. Species that bite throughout the day are more difficult to avoid.
Wear long, loose-fitting clothing to avoid mosquito bites. Use head nets when mosquitoes are abundant.
Use repellents whenever in a mosquito infested location.
For short-term relief in outdoor areas such as patios and picnic areas, use a fogger and citronella candles or punks as a deterrent.
Protect your pets with heart-worm treatments, which can be purchased from grocery stores or pet specialty stores.

Ticks

Ticks can be found on both humans and dogs. In urban areas, the most common tick is the brown dog tick. Dogs can become seriously infested with ticks to the point where it can be fatal, due to heavy blood loss. Ticks usually feed on more than one host during their lives, thus, they are able to transmit diseases to both humans and animals. Some transmitted diseases can be similar to the flu while others result in rashes, fever, or joint stiffness. If you experience any abnormal rash or illness after being bitten by a tick, the best thing to do would be to seek a doctor for treatment.

Ticks can cause many ailments. Some of them include: itching and inflammation of the skin, swelling around the bite, infections, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia (a disease that affects the lymph nodes and causes fever), and lyme disease-a disease that can cause arthritis and nervous disorders.

Cattle pastures, brushy areas and the edges of forests and fields are the best places for ticks. Ticks stick themselves to your skin when they bite. Using hot matches or grease will not remove ticks from your skin and can even increase the risk of infection. Instead, to remove ticks, grasp the tick as close to the head as possible with tweezers. Remove it with a firm, slow pull without twisting. Do not touch it or crush it with your bare hands because you may pick up germs or be at risk for infection. Apply an antiseptic to the skin after removing the tick. You can follow the same steps to remove ticks from a pet.

Tick Control

Protect yourself and your pets from tick bites by following some of the control methods the Cooperative suggests:

Make it harder for ticks to enter clothing by tucking shirttails inside pants and wearing long pants and shirts.

Use duct tape or wide masking tape to seal pants cuffs to boots. Tucking your pants legs inside your socks is also effective.

Avoid sitting on the ground or on logs in brushy, tick-infested areas. Ticks often crawl around on a host for hours before biting. When in tick-infested areas, have a friend check you frequently for ticks before they attach.

Around the home, keep tall grass and weeds cut short. Ticks like to climb vertical surfaces to rest after feeding. When treating yards for brown dog ticks, spray the siding of the house, fences, trees and other hiding places as well as the lawn.

When using insecticides, follow label directions carefully and do not apply more than is recommended. Tick insecticides can be dangerous to pets and children if misapplied.

Fleas

The last of the four blood suckers is the tiny and wingless flea. While small and almost microscopic, fleas ironically cost Americans almost $9 billion a year to control them. In Texas, the most common flea problems are caused by the cat flea, which feeds on cats, dogs, and wildlife. This particular type of flea does not normally live on humans, but do bite people who come in close contact with infested animals.

Flea bites cause small, red, itchy bumps, usually on the ankles and lower legs. People with allergies to flea bites suffer from hives, rashes or generalized itching. Allergic reactions usually appear 12 to 24 hours after a bite, and may last a week or more.

Fleas that have fed on rodents may transmit diseases, including plague and murine typhus. Protect yourself from these diseases by avoiding close contact with wild rodents such as squirrels, rats, and prairie dogs. On the other hand, cat fleas do not carry plague.

Flea Control

The Cooperative suggests keying in to an integrated flea control program to prevent and eliminate fleas from the home.

Sanitation: Change pet bedding regularly and vacuum thoroughly. Vacuuming removes up to 30 percent of the larvae and up to 60 percent of flea eggs from a carpet, as well as the larvae's food supply of dried blood. Vacuum under furniture, cushions, chairs, beds, and along walls. Discard vacuum cleaner bags at least once a week. Fleas can continue to develop inside vacuum cleaner bags and re-infest the house.

Treating Pets: Your pet's first line of defense against fleas is a flea comb and a good bath. Soap acts as a gentle insecticide and helps control light infestations on your pet. Though time consuming, combing helps reduce the need for insecticides. Flea combs have fine teeth that remove adult fleas from fur. Most dogs and cats seem to enjoy this treatment - pay special attention to the face and neck, and the area in front of the tail. Dip the comb frequently in soapy water or an alcohol solution to kill fleas removed from the pet. Insect growth regulators, or IGRs, are a safe preventative treatment for fleas. Spot-on treatments (pesticides applied to one or more spots on the animal's back) control adult fleas effectively. Natural oils on the fur also help transfer the pesticide to all parts of the pet's body.

Got Fleas, but No Pets?

Just because your home doesn't have pets does not mean that you are 100% safe from fleas. Homes can become infested with fleas when no pets are present. Wild animals such as bats, roof rats, squirrels, raccoons, and wild dogs and cats around the home, especially if you live in a highly wooded and forested area, may be the source of an infestation.

Questions you should ask before you begin would be what type of sailing do you want to do? Day sailing? Overnight cruising? How many of you will be using the boat at the same time? What can you afford?

Day sailing requires mostly getting the idea to build a boat, and then finding the right plans. You don't have to worry about long hours at the helm, or inclement weather. You can pick and choose when to be on the water and when to follow the ducks, and get out of the water. The smallest blade span will work for a room that is no bigger than 50 square feet while a 36" blade span will service an area of approximately 70' to 80' square feet. Larger rooms, such as 100 square feet need at least a 42" blade span and a room that is larger than 100 square feet should have a fan with the longest blade span you can find.

Make sure the pitch of the blade is approximately 14 degrees for the most efficient air movement.

Many fans are equipped with lighting. Consider the size of the room and what the room will be used for when deciding whether or not to buy a fan with lights. Most manufacturers make ceiling fans that can be adapted to lighted fixtures with a lighting kit designed specifically for a particular model.

Finally, buy a ceiling fan that is reversible so that you can run it in one direction for
cooling and in the other direction for heating.

Keep in mind that the fan blades should be at least seven feet from the floor and a foot
below the ceiling. For lower ceilings, choose a hugger type fan. With higher ceilings, you can purchase what is called a down rod for purposes of extending the fan closer to the floor.

Okay. It's time to get down to some of the basic issues related to getting these things up where they belong and doing what they're designed to do.

You've purchased the fan(s). As you unpack the first one, make sure you check the parts you take from the box against the listing (usually an exploded drawing) of the parts shown in the manufacturer's literature. Lay out the parts and then check them off to make sure that you've got everything you're supposed to have. Keep the parts away from the area where you will actually install the fan to keep from creating a mess as you begin the actual job.

Be sure you've got all the tools you need before starting the job. This includes a stepladder, the right kind of screwdrivers, a pair of pliers, something to strip the wires with, a circuit tester, a ceiling box, a hammer and a saw to make the opening in the drywall. It's probably a good idea to have your toolbox handy just in case you need something you haven't anticipated. The best way to make sure you've got everything you need is to read the installation instructions from beginning to end before you do anything else.

If you're among the fortunate, the room will have a ceiling box that is being used for a light fixture already mounted in the center of the room. Generally, the existing ceiling box will need to be replaced with one specifically designed for mounting a ceiling fan. Ceiling fans weigh considerably more than light fixtures and may require additional support. If the material that came with the fan doesn't include a new ceiling box and mounting brackets, you will have to purchase these separately before proceeding. You may need to hire an experienced, licensed electrician to do this part of the job if you don't have the expertise yourself. The primary consideration is to make certain that the ceiling box provides adequate support for the weight of the ceiling fan. A brace (mounting bracket) mounted between ceilings joists will provide the necessary support.

On the other hand, if you don't have a ceiling box mounted in the center of the room, you
will need to undertake the necessary renovations to run electricity from the closest source to the center of the room. The steps required to do this are beyond the scope of this article and will usually require the services of an experienced and licensed electrician.

Most manuals that are packed with the ceiling fan will provide considerable detail
regarding what it will take to adequately support the ceiling fan.

Make sure the electricity to the room is turned off at the box (circuit breaker or fuse box). Test the wiring with a circuit tester to make sure it's off. If the room has inadequate natural lighting, you may need to run an extension cord with a lighting fixture from
another part of the house to provide you with adequate visibility.

Carefully read the installation manual and follow the step-by-step instructions for
installing the fan. Keep in mind that this is usually at least a two-person job. Even though the instructions may not tell you this, be sure that there is sufficient clearance between the blades and the ceiling to attach the blades after installing the motor. If not, install the blades to the motor arms before attaching the motor to the electrical box.

It's common sense so it may not be mentioned in the manual but make sure the screws that are used to attach the blades are evenly tightened.

Now that your fan is installed, it's time to test its operation. Turn on the power and switch on the fan. Although the manufacturer should make certain that the blades are evenly weighted and that their angles are all the same, it may still wobble somewhat once it begins to rotate. If this is the case, turn the fan off and check to make certain that the screws that attach the blades are all tight. Use a yardstick held vertically at the edge of one of the blades and manually rotate the blades to make sure that they are in alignment. If there is any misalignment, gently bend the blade up or down to get the blade aligned properly.

If the wobble persists, it usually means that one or more of the blades weigh more or less
than the others. Many manufacturers include weight-balancing clips with the ceiling fans. These clips install on the top of the blade and add weight. Less weight is added the closer to the motor housing the clip is installed. Adjust the clip(s) until the wobble stops. If weight-balancing clips were not included, they can be purchased at a lighting store, home center or at many hardware stores.

Your ceiling fan should be ready to use and should offer you years of pleasure and comfort.

As we look to the future of self storage, it's very clear that the future looks bright. There are a few trends afoot backed by solid industry data that justify my positive outlook on this high growth industry. These trends are as follows:

Increasing Demand

The U.S. Population is predicted to reach 400 million by the year 2050. All indicators show that Americans continue to be a highly mobile society with a high propensity to accumulate "stuff". This means that as of the time of this publication, we stand to add 150 million potential customers to our prospect list who are searching for somewhere to store their belongings.

High Tech Facilities

As our customers become more selective in where to store their belongings, owners of older facilities will need to make necessary improvements to remain competitive. This will ultimately result in more sophisticated and higher tech facilities offering more user friendly layouts, larger offices, flexible unit mixes, kiosks, high security, and more climate control units. In addition, we can expect to see self storage investors competing for the premier parcels located in the high traffic retail areas of town. As a result, municipalities are beginning to require that these facilities have a retail component in order to increase the amount of sales tax generated and paid to those local governments. They are also requiring that the facilities have a certain "look and feel" that blend in with the surrounding businesses. Nicer fencing, or split block security walls, paved drives, certain architectural features, and an attractive landscape package will be mandatory and made part of the architectural permit prior to construction, and strictly monitored for compliance.

More Products and Services

As self storage moves closer to Main Street, we will begin to see an increase in the number of customized services available for its customers. We have already seen some partnerships being formed that provide complementary products and services. Of course the most common example is truck rental, but we are now seeing pack and ship businesses, EBAY® add-it stores, Kinko's®, or co-locating with retail stores such as Starbucks® or Subway® on the ground floor with storage above in multi-story facilities.

Focus on Customer Service

As more and more people frequent our self storage facilities, they will begin to expect more from our facilities and the face behind the counter. These sophisticated customers are demanding excellence and consumer loyalty will quickly go out the door, along with their stuff, if they have a bad experience. Conversely, when customers are satisfied with the service they receive, they will stay, and hopefully will tell their friends about the good experience they have had. This provides an excellent opportunity for us to exceed their expectations, and provide a substantially better experience than our less educated, less professional competitors in our chosen markets. My goal is to be my customer's LAST storage provider by never giving them a reason to look anywhere else, for any reason!

Industry Consolidation

As the larger public companies and REIT's are pressured by Wall Street to produce results, we will surely see more consolidation of the mid to large size companies. Those same mid to large companies can't meet their growth deadlines by developing their own facilities from the ground up. The 3 years it takes to choose a plot of land, apply for zoning, permits, and then build and stabilize a property simply isn't fast enough for them to meet their goals. Don't misunderstand me however, the mid to large companies ARE still active developers, but their appetite for growth will fuel a surge in acquisitions and mergers for years to come.

Increased Competition

As all eyes are now on Self Storage, we are sure to see a number of new entrants into this facet of commercial real estate. Unfortunately, this will lead to overbuilding in some areas as many newer developers will ignore the feasibility criteria for developing a facility in a given market. Therefore, it will be imperative for owners and developers to work more efficiently to attract and retain customers in this new environment.

Increase in Value

In the future, the upward value trend in self storage will continue for a number of reasons: Predictably low interest rates will push cap rates low, and net larger profits for those who choose to sell. For that reason, self storage continues to rise in popularity as one of the commercial real estate assets of choice, and will ultimately attract more investors. There are still a number of individuals and investment firms that are stinging from the recent stock market corrections. These investors are now searching for a more stable investment that they can "touch and feel" as opposed to investing in a company that they have never heard of, run by people they have never met, in an industry they know nothing about. There is a lot of money chasing a few deals. Many investors have created a great deal of value in their existing portfolios, and they are selling off these properties and are looking for places to spend their 1031 tax deferred exchange dollars without paying taxes. Self storage has continued to be a great investment to exchange into and more and more investors are choosing to park their dollars here before their tax deferred status expires.

As the saying goes, the only thing we know for sure is that things are going to change. I do subscribe to that line of thinking, but I also believe that self storage will remain a reasonably predictable, stable, low maintenance, high cash flow investment for professional investors for years to come.
