Wedding Dress Perfection - Petite Or Pleasantly Plump

The biggest challenge for any bride to - be is making the right decision when choosing her wedding dress besides that of choosing the ideal partner she wants to spend the rest of her life with. This is where the bride gets to live her dream of being princess for the day. So what are we waiting for lets go make your dream come true.

Brides-to-be need to consider the comfort level when buying the wedding dress. If the dress causes you extreme discomfort; then expect all dances at the reception be that of a waltz, heaven forbid should you take to the floor to do the hippy hippy shake. Keep in mind that if the dress is tight it can hamper your circulation causing you to faint.

Plans for the wedding dress usually start months before the set date, well in advance in some cases. What you have to remember once you have chosen the gown you have to stick with your diet, no piling on the pounds only to lose them with more expense incurred where the wedding dress has to be altererd.

Styles of wedding dress/gown selections can be chosen personally from a bridal shop. Magazines are also a good choice for making your selection and for gathering some useful tips on wedding plans

An important factor that has to be addressed is body types. Petite to pleasantly plump figure shapes will definitely need to be taken into consideration when making that decision in what will or will not suit your frame. Either way regardless of size the right choice will have you looking beautiful on the day. To find the perfect wedding dress is to be prepared to make a day of it where the trying of many will be in abundance.

Vera Wang is one of the famous names in the world of weddings. VW is noted for the detailing put into her gowns along with luxurious craftsmanship, also an additional bonus of personal hand beading. Famous stars like Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson line up in the wedding queue, not forgetting Jennifer Lopez, Uma Thurman. If your budget allows then go all out for a designer dress.

Other options for the pocket which says go easy on the pennies. In addition to the more traditional bridal shops, check out discount stores, charity shops, even going online at eBay is another fine option recommended and far less expensive.

Common sense prevails when buying the perfect wedding dress online, because of the way the purchase is to be handled, it is a good chance that you only get to see the dress by photo so be sure to check measurements and be specific when asking details on the condition of the dress. Another important factor is to double check on the person selling before going ahead with any transaction involving money.

If it is a traditional wedding theme that you have in mind for the wedding then go for a vintage dress. Vintage dresses intend to discolour so check this out before making a purchase. Remember vintage represents old so check for wear or tear.

Vintage dress fabrics dating back to the 1900 and earlier have a tendency to deteriorate.

Setting your heart on a specific design only to find that it is not available due to age or over your budget limit then make enquiries for a reproduction of the chosen wedding dress you had in mind.
You can find many stores that focus particularly on reproduction dresses where designed wedding gowns on specific themes or periods of time hang in dozens on rails waiting to be snapped up.

Dreams do come true if you make them happen. Well girls what are you waiting for your dream theme is just waiting to happen.

Clash of the Card Titans (Visa vs Mastercard)

It's the rivalry to end all rivalries. The competition between Troy and the Spartans for the hand of fair Helen pales in comparison to the battle for supremacy between these two entities. Not everyone knows that about the battle at Troy, but every one is aware of the clash between the two titans of the credit card world: The clash between MasterCard and Visa. Which card is really better?

Before we compare the benefits of these two card conglomerates with each other, it must be made clear to the consumer that Visa and MasterCard are not credit card brands. These are, in actuality, payment systems; a group of financial institutions that back each other up to ensure that the charges the holder makes on his card would be paid, no matter where he is, at any given time of the day. The credit card brand is the name of the financing institution that issues the card. The Visa or MC logo you see on the card simply signify that the card you hold is backed up by one of these two major associations.

Now that that's out of the way, it's time to focus on their individual merits. In terms of acceptability, both systems are recognized in various small, medium and large retail and commercial enterprises the world over. And why not, the member companies of both associations number more than 25,000 - each! And they have members from all corners of the globe, from places at the freezing arctic poles to the scorching land located along the equator. There are, however, some places where a specific card type is more prevalently used. You may have to consult with travel guides to know which card (whether Visa or MasterCard) is preferred.

How about if we consider consumer benefits? It would be grossly unfair to use this as a gauge because special offers, rewards, points and rebates are not offered by Visa nor MasterCard. These are actually conceptualized by credit card companies and these promotions are used not to entice people to select Visa or MasterCard, but for consumers to sign up with their services. How these card issuing companies bundle their special packages up depend on how the other card companies present their special offers. Since that's not a reliable measure, consumer benefits will have to be discarded.

How about interest rates and flexibility of payment? Again, it would not be fair to use these as measures of comparison because, MasterCard and Visa do not have a say on the interest rates levied by card companies on their clients. The interest rates may be dictated by governmental regulatory board, or by the card issuing companies themselves. MasterCard and Visa have no hand on these matters because, as early stated, these two entities are merely payment systems. The same goes with the payment terms. The terms are dictated by the issuing establishment.

Given the facts, it appears that there's a standstill. Neither Visa nor MasterCard is better than the other. These two entities aim to make sure that those holding cards bearing their logos are covered, no matter where they go. The real rivalry is not between these two, but between the individual card issuing companies! So don't despair if you only have a MasterCard or a Visa because both give the same service to card holders. Just be secure in the knowledge that, whatever card type you hold (whether it's a Visa or a MasterCard), your purchases, wherever these may be, will always be guaranteed. And that's all that matters.

Small Closet Organization

Small closet organization begins and ends with discipline. You need to take the time to empty the closets, review the closet items with a critical eye, organize your stored belongings into like groups, and then replace the items in an organized manner. The purchase of a closet organizer system is helpful but not completely necessary.

The first important step is to empty the closet and review the closet contents. It is impossible to organize a small closet that contains too much stuff. I cannot emphasize that point strongly enough. As a general rule at least 10% of the stuff in every closet is entirely disposable. Do yourself a favor and get rid of the clutter. It is not easy to get rid of things if there is a slight chance that they may be of use in the next 5 years. However, you will be doing yourself an immense favor by going through a process of getting rid of clutter. Get rid of 10% or 1 out of every 10 items. Get rid of more if you can.

The next step in small closet organization is to focus the contents of your closet. Closets are best organized in terms of like items. If it is a linen closet then limit the contents to sheets and towels. Closets become disorganized when they contain a vast array of items. I once had a client store her tennis racket in the linen closet for years as a result of stashing it there once while cleaning up for a party. Keep your sports equipment in one place, your cleaning supplies in another place, etc. etc.

You will likely find that some of the contents of your small closet are best suited for other storage locations. Move these items to their new home. Not only should you narrow the focus of the contents to like items but you should also pay attention to the frequency with which you access the items. Keep items you use frequently in centrally located closets. Store infrequently used items in closets that are harder to access.

Regardless of size all closets benefit from organization. Small closet organization might be slightly more important as the space is at a premium.

Ways to Cut Alcohol Costs at Your Wedding

One of the most expensive parts of the wedding reception can be the alcohol. You want to put on a great party for your guests, but at the same time keep the bar tab reasonable. There are a few ways that you can cut costs on the liquor without appearing to cut corners.

At any type of party, the hosts need to set their priorities. Do you want to focus your budget on the flowers, or the music, or the food and drink? Perhaps if she can save a little money on the cost of the reception, the bride could afford to give more special custom bridal jewelry sets to her bridesmaids (it goes without saying that custom bridal jewelry for the bride has a place in the budget - the wedding gown simply isn't complete without it!). Or maybe cutting down on the alcohol would allow you to take a longer honeymoon, or simply to avoid overspending. There are many good reasons to look for ways to cut costs at your reception.

It would be easy to say, we will save money by having a cash bar. Although that would be the least expensive option for the bride and groom, it is not really very nice to expect your guests to pay for their own refreshments. The trick is to save money while still being gracious and hospitable.

A good place to start is with a frank discussion with your caterer, before signing the contract. If you let them know that you very much want them for your wedding, but can only hire them if they help you with the liquor budget, they may have some good suggestions. (Or if not, you may want to choose a different caterer.)

An easy way to keep the bar tab under control is only to serve "rail" or non-brand alcohol. If each guest consumes two cocktails at $5 each instead of $7 apiece, that would total a savings of $400 for 100 guests. An even better way to save is to bring in your own liquor if your venue permits it. You can often find much better prices on wine and alcohol at warehouse type stores, especially if you live in or near a state that does not tax alcohol, like New Hampshire. Some stores will even permit you to return any unopened bottles, so you do not have to worry about over-buying.

Other tactics include having an open bar during the cocktail hour, and then serving only wine and beer during the dinner. Most guests will be perfectly happy with this arrangement, and a glass of the house white will cost you a lot less than a Grey Goose martini. Another great idea is to serve one signature cocktail instead of having a full open bar. It looks very chic to have a special drink just for your wedding, and it can also save money, depending what you choose (if it has a flavorful juice or syrup base, nobody will be able to tell that you used the non-brand vodka).

Managing a budget for your wedding is always a delicate balancing act. On the one hand, the bride and groom want to make everything just perfect, but on the other hand, almost every couple faces the reality of what they can actually afford. The alcohol bill can be an easy place to cut costs without taking anything away from the beauty of your wedding day.

Mystery Shopping

Mystery shopping is an excellent way to make extra money. In fact, some people make a full time living doing it.

There are many mystery shopping companies that will pay you to shop, eat at restaurants and take part in focus groups.

A mystery shop consists of getting paid to go into a business without the employee's knowledge and reporting back to the mystery shopping company.

A focus group is when you get paid to sit down with other people who are also getting paid and discuss new products or services.

Mystery shopping jobs and focus groups are easier to find if you live in or near a large metropolitan area.

After you do a mystery shop you answer some questions and file your report with the mystery shopping company. These reports are usually set up as a series of questions and often can be completed quickly.

The reason they have mystery shops and focus groups is so that companies can get feedback on their employees, products and services. That way they can see where there might be problems and make the necessary changes to improve things.

A few years ago I had some free time and I wanted to make some extra money. I took a course, How to Become a Mystery Shopper, at a local community college. After completing the course I registered with a few mystery shopping companies online.

You can do a search on Google for "mystery shopping." Bypass the mystery shopping websites that are trying to sell something. You want to find the mystery shopping websites for the actual mystery shopping companies. These mystery shopping companies will never charge you any type of fee to register or to do mystery shops or focus groups.

Be sure to read all the free mystery shopping information you come across. There is an art to being a good mystery shopper. Basically you are like a reporter. You will never add your feelings or what you think to a mystery shopping report. Your job is to just answer the questions, report the facts and describe what actually happened during your shop.

You never want to give your own recommendations. That is not why you are hired. If the mystery shopping company wants a consultant, they will hire one. All they want you to do is to answer questions with just the facts of your mystery shopping assignment.

Once you find a few mystery shopping companies you can then register with them. They'll contact you by email whenever they have a mystery shopping job in your area. You'll only respond to the emails when you want to do the shop. Otherwise you can just delete the email. You get to pick and choose the shops you want to do.

A couple of years ago I did some apartment shops for the Jancyn Evaluation Company that took me about half an hour to complete. Since they paid $25, I was basically being paid $50 an hour.

You can register with the Jancyn Evaluation Shops Company. They may pay more than $25 today for apartment shops since it has been about two years since I've done an apartment shop for them.

Jancyn also does a lot of shops and surveys for the Ross Dress for Less retail stores. I'm not sure if Jancyn still has a business relationship with Ross, but I once handed out survey forms in one of the local Ross stores here in the Seattle area and made $500 for about 30 hours of work.

Here's the URL for Jancyn if you'd like to register with them to do some shops. http://www.jancyn.com

Another mystery shopping company that I get a lot of email requests for shops for is the Secret Shopper Company. They seem to specialize in shops for Veterinary Clinics. They pay $15 plus up to $100 payment NOT including tip + $10. The only catch is that you have to own a cat or dog, which I don't, but maybe you do. Here's their URL http://www.secretshopper.com

OK, I've saved the best for last. Fieldwork specializes in setting up focus groups for some of the biggest companies in the US. They pay $50 to $75 for a focus group meeting that usually lasts about an hour.

The last one I did with them was for some research for eBay. They were trying to come up with a name for a new category on their website.

Fieldwork is located throughout the US in major metropolitan areas. You'll have to visit their website to see if they are located near where you live.

It's great if you have children since Fieldwork does a lot of focus groups involving children. Perhaps you can talk your kids into splitting the fee with you. Again, the pay usually works out to be about $50 to $75 an hour.

Unfortunately I have no children, but the next time I get an email for a focus group for children I'll borrow a couple of my neighbor's children. Here's the link for Fieldwork. Fieldwork.com

Now you have a basic idea of how the mystery shopping and focus groups work. Start searching for more mystery shopping websites and get paid to shop, eat and taking part in focus groups. It's easy money!

How to Install Solar Power System - What You Need to Install Solar Power System in Your Home

Wondering how to install solar power system and do not know where to start? Realistically speaking, I will not be able to cover all you need to know about how to install solar power system here in this short article. I can, however, give you an overview of the subjects you need to focus on to get yourselves started especially if you are thinking of doing a DIY project.

Before we start, the topics listed can in one way or another be found on the internet. However, due to the tons of information out there, you may find yourselves overwhelmed by the sheer amount of info you will come across before you even start. You might also come across bogus information from unreliable sources. From my experience, it is much more efficient to go for a guide that not only has all the essential topics, but also has proven records. It also has to be easy to read and follow for DIY novices. Anyway, let's look at what information you need first:

1. Firstly, an overall picture of how the system works and if applicable, alternative ways it can be set up based on requirements and environment. This is important to get you started on the theories behind the system. You should not need to spend too much time here. If you need 2 days to digest what the whole system is about, it is too complicated for you as a beginner.

2. How to get hold of the components. You may think that building a system to generate electricity from solar is going to be expensive. Not anymore. You can in fact build the entire system using parts easily available at your local hardware store. A good guide will teach you how to install solar power system with the best components at the lowest bargain.

3. How to install solar power system. This will include detailed instructions of how you connect the components together, bearing in mind the electrical requirements and settings, as well as troubleshooting. Let me say this again, it is absolutely possible for a complete novice to learn how to install solar power system and it does not take months. The deciding factor is whether you are willing to spend a few hours per week on the project for a lasting supply of electricity.

4. You need to track the amount of electricity you are generating with the system as well as how to store excess electricity that is not used so that you can use it later. The system is not complete without these 2 components.

Other topics that are also useful include how to install solar power system that is on-grid and off-grid and how to generate electricity with wind turbines.

How to Purchase Autographed Celebrity Photos

Most die hard avid fans of celebrities no doubt collect memorabilia from the various works that the celebrity has taken part in. This is very true when it comes to celebrity's who are involved in film or the music industry. Most avid collectors will generally focus their celebrity based collection on one or a handful of celebrities. They will then work their hardest to collect as much memorabilia on this specific celebrity or group.

For most collectors, they will no doubt want to purchase and or obtain autographed celebrity photos for their collection. Obtaining an autographed photo of your favorite celebrity is no doubt the crowning achievement to any collectors collection. Finding an actual photo with a legitimate and actual autograph of the celebrity in question brings more life to the collection. This is due to the fact that now you own an item that has actually been touched and looked upon by the celebrity you own a collection of.

There are many methods and routes that a collector can take in order to purchase a autographed celebrity photo. To begin with, a collector can visit the website of the celebrity they are hoping to obtain a autographed photo of. They can generally find when and where memorabilia auctions pertaining to their specific celebrity will be held, just by visiting their website.

In fact, many celebrity based websites actually conduct auctions on a monthly basis wherein they will auction off a specific number of autographed celebrity photos of the individual the website is promoting. These autographed photos are usually endorsed by the celebrity and are proven to be authentic. Each photo will be accompanied with a certificate of authentication along with a guarantee that the actual celebrity in question signed the autograph themselves.

Another method that many collectors use to obtain autographed celebrity photos, is to visit local or out of state celebrity memorabilia stores. These stores specialize in celebrity memorabilia and generally carry autographed celebrity photos. They also take the time to make sure that all the photos they sell are one hundred percent legitimate and test them for authentication.

However, at times you will run into crooked owners who state that an autographed celebrity photo in their store is authentic when in fact it isn't. Make sure to do your homework and investigate any location you are considering buying an autographed celebrity photograph from. You will want to contact the Better Business Bureau and make sure that they have a good reputation. Also, ask them questions to see what process they took to make sure that the item in question is authentic. If they used a authentication service, be sure to investigate and check them out as well, to make sure that you are getting what you are looking for.

A final method in purchasing autographed celebrity photos is to look into private sellers who are parting ways with pieces in their own collections. These sellers can generally be found on the Internet and can generally be found on celebrity websites. However, as with every method that you can use to purchase autographed celebrity photos, be sure to check the product for authenticity before committing to a purchase.

Bathroom Sinks - Different Styles and Benefits

When remodeling or building a home most people focus on the details like bathroom sinks. It's surprising how many different styles are available. You can find them at a number of different stores; though most people prefer to choose one from a catalog or online. It can take a little bit of time to just look through all the different styles.

Console sinks appear more like a table and often come with two sinks or one large sink. The variety of styles are amazing so the chances are good that you can find one to fit your bathroom. Some are longer while others are smaller. Even the legs are unique to each style; they come in metal or wood. These are very nice sinks and will go well with a variety of decor.

Vanity sinks look like they an old fashioned chest; though some models are more modern. Some models come with a mirror and others do not. Vanity sinks have a few different styles; there is a modern style, an antique style, a traditional style, a single style, and a double style. These are great if you want to store your personal things because most models come with a door.

Vessel sinks come in a modern yet traditional style sink. Vessel sinks are shaped like an old fashioned bowl. There is a company that makes only vessel sinks and makes an array of styles; bathroomvesselsinks.com. While they sell other things their selection of vessel sinks is truly amazing. From glass to marble they make them from all types of materials; they are top of the line sinks.

Wall-Mounted sinks are a style we are all are familiar with because they are in schools and other public facilities. They don't allow for much, if any, storage yet they do have their benefits; they work great in small spaces. But there isn't much of a selection when it comes to wall-mounted sinks. They are usually your basic white sink mounted on a wall.

Pedestal sinks tend to be best for guest bathrooms or half baths. They add a lot of class and beauty to the bathroom but you probably want a different style for your bedroom as they lack storage area. Pedestal sinks have a beautiful stem and look something like a rose. There beauty is what is so appealing and they come in many different styles.

No matter what style sink you may choose for your bathroom these are some of the styles that are most popular. You can find them in stores that specialize in sinks and bathtubs or you can surf the net like most people like to do.

When remodeling, or building a new home, it's important to choose your bathroom sinks and other fixtures long before completion of construction. This helps allow for delays in delivery that can severely impact completion of your project.

How to Get Rid of Black Mold

Black mold is toxic and can cause severe health problems for the people who are exposed to it for prolonged periods of time so learning how to get rid of black mold is key if you live in a wet or humid area. As such, as soon as you spot even small numbers of black mold in your home, its best to start getting rid of them.

Mold can grow very quickly and needs only a moist, organic surface and a temperature between 2 and 40 degrees Celsius so it can grow pretty much anywhere - on your carpet, your furniture, your clothing, your drywall, wood, books - most household items. So, if you have black mold, the sooner you begin getting rid of it the better for this will prevent it from growing beyond your control and eventually turning into a large and costly problem.

How to get rid of black mold?

You start at the root of it all. Most varieties of mold would need a combination of darkness and damp environments in order to thrive, so the first thing you should focus on is dehumidifying your home. You can do this by buying a dehumidifier unit which can be easily purchased from any home depot as well as in other home supply stores. The purpose of this unit would be to suck the naturally produced moisture in the air inside your home. Do remember to clean out and make sure to empty the unit's water collection bucket after every use.

After this, you can begin step two which involves using a bleach and water solution to spray on the mold. You mat also purchase some ready made cleaning substances that are specially made to get rid of mold as well as other cleaning tools you might need. However, it is important to note that whatever tools you use on the mold must be immediately disposed off afterward as these are already contaminated. Another important thing to note is to not mix bleach and ammonia for doing so will produce harmful fumes that are bad for your health.

5 Preschool Activities For Grandparents Day

As with most holidays, school will use Grandparents Day as a special activity for the class. This can be especially true of preschool, where there is as much focus on social activity and every day life as there is on learning the functionalities of reading, writing, and arithmetic. However, with so many different holidays to plan activities and crafts for, you may be out of ideas for Grandparents Day. Have no fear; there is always something new and different to try.

If your preschool has a high level of parental involvement, you may have your preschoolers create family trees. While these don’t have to be long and detailed, they can trace the immediate family and the grandparents. It can also be made creative, actually drawing a tree with branches that reach to each family member.

You can also have your students create Grandparents Day “gift bags”. Make the bag as much a part of the gift as what it contains by having your students color paper lunch bags. Then, fill it with a hand-crafted greeting card for the holiday and perhaps things like a colored picture or a couple of pieces of candy.

One fun idea, if you have the time and patience, is to have the children put on a show. They could act out a scene depicting children showing respect and thanks to the elderly or even sing to their grandparents. Having these respected members of society visit the classroom could be a very special event and could make the elderly feel useful. At the same time, perhaps the children’s grandparents could visit and tell stories from their youth, read books, or even just answer questions about the “olden days”.

With signed permission slips, you may plan a field trip to a nursing home, where the children can greet the lonely elderly and wish them a happy Grandparents Day at a time when there is no one else to bring such a pleasant message to their lives.

Or, you could simply plan an arts and crafts activity that will create a cute gift for the childrens' grandparents on this special holiday.

What Nationally Published Columnist, Cindy Laferle Has To Say About Writing & Journalism

Today Norm Goldman, Editor of sketchandtravel and bookpleasures is honored to have as a guest, the nationally published newspaper columnist and author, Cindy LaFerle. Cindy recently published a book entitled, Writing Home, a collection of essays focusing on home, family and motherhood.

Cindy was at one time editor of a national travel magazine, the Innsider that focused on country inns, B&Bs, and small historic hotels in the USA.

She was also responsible for helping Uncle Ben´s (the rice company) launch its annual Best Country Inns award.

Good day Cindy and thank you for agreeing to participate in our interview.

Norm:

You indicated to me that the Innsider magazine set a standard of quality for smaller inns and B&Bs. Please explain.

Cindy:

Back in the early 1980s, when Innsider was newly launched, smaller historic inns and B&Bs were relatively new to the average American traveler.

They´d been popular for many years in Europe, as you know, Norm, but most Americans were not as comfortable with the idea of staying in small inn or B&B 20 years ago. The old term guest house had negative, seedy connotations and in some cases, that reputation was justified. Those little "Mom and Pop" guest houses weren´t typically AAA rated or listed in guidebooks back then, and sometimes there was a very good reason for that.

That old reputation was hard for the GOOD B&Bs and country inns to conquer at first, since the average traveler was more comfortable at, say, a Holiday Inn.

Even so, charming B&Bs and country inns were indeed catching on with sophisticated travelers who were familiar with the smaller inns of Europe --but those travelers really had to work hard to research the quality of American B&Bs/country inns. There weren´t as many inn guidebooks back then, either, although COUNTRY INNS & BACK ROADS, by Norm Simpson, were in print
and highly regarded.

That´s where Innsider came into play. We didn´t establish ratings
per se, but we sought out the BEST places we could find, featuring only those that were clean, well-run, attractive and historically interesting. We didn´t feature anything that was sub-standard and therefore set the bar high for other small inns that wanted to attract business. We also worked with professional inn organizations to improve and help standardize the quality of these small inns -- without sacrificing the personality and uniqueness that make them so special. As editor of Innsider, I attended with my staff many conferences for small innkeepers and spoke about what made a first-class B&b or country inn. It was great fun.

Norm:

You also mentioned that you worked as a free lance inspector for
Michigan´s Lake Bed & Breakfast Association. What did you exactly do and perhaps you can elaborate as to what are the ingredients required to have a top quality B&B.

Cindy:

This association was founded to promote high standards for
Michigan´s smaller inns, and I was asked to help establish those. I was part of a small team who were to inspect the member inns. We looked for things such as overall cleanliness in the common rooms and baths; amenities such as tissues, fresh sheets, good lighting for reading, and so on. We made sure that kitchens were exceptionally clean and that breakfasts offered were substantial and/or reflected was advertised. That sort of thing. We had PAGES of items to examine or discuss with the innkeepers on the inspection lists, so I could go on and on. It was all about quality and upgrading the smaller inn for the comfort of guests. If the inn didn´t pass inspection, it lost membership and listing in the state guide.

Norm:

What is your idea of an ideal romantic inn or B&B, and do you have any favorite romantic inns or B&Bs?

Cindy:

That´s a tough question, but I think a romantic inn needs to be
one-of-a-kind and superbly appointed it should be beautifully decorated and offer a few special things you wouldn´t find in other hotels or at home.... special touches like fancy sheets, larger and lovely bathrooms with good toiletries, comfy chairs and space for reading and relaxing together.

An in-room fireplace is always nice.

Local color is important. The romantic inn should also be located
near a wonderful restaurant and other attractions like good shopping or historic sites and recreational activities. I like to be located in a historic district, say, like Savannah or Charleston, in a gorgeous inn that´s within walking distance of a town.

Here in Michigan, there´s a secluded, charming place called the
Victorian Villa (Union City, Michigan). Staying there is an experience in and of itself, even if you never leave the grounds. Everything is authentically Victorian, exquisite and historic, including the building itself. Innkeeper Ron Gibson stages Victorian theme weekends and teas, including a Sherlock Holmes Mystery Weekend, which are seasonal and make it
a special occasion to stay there. It´s just beautiful and the rooms are large you are staying in a mansion that feels like a Victorian home.

Norm:

How did you become a travel writer, and how did your experience as a travel writer give you a wonderful background for the kind of work you do now?

Cindy:

I started out (some 20 years ago) as a freelance features writer for my local paper, and had written a few stories about B&Bs (because I´d always stayed in them and enjoyed them). The photographer, who was newly hired to work for Innsider, approached me and told me that the publisher was looking
for an editor who had some knowledge of B&Bs/small inns and could work part-time as editor-in-chief. My son was a baby then, so the flexibility appealed to me, as did the subject matter & although as the magazine grew, it was not as flexible and involved a lot of travel, which was harder to manage with a family.

But during the nearly 6 years I worked for Innsider, I got a chance to see MANY wonderful historic places in this country, and I learned so much. Travel is essential, I believe, for every writer, no matter what genre they prefer.

And, as corny and clichéd as it sounds here, I also learned there´s no place like home. Travel broadens your perspective and also teaches you to be grateful for what you have. Traveling down south for the magazine, for example, we often drove through some very economically depressed areas en route to the historic inns and Civil War battlegrounds we were going to cover and photograph. Things like that stay with you, sometimes even more
than the beauty you find on the way.

Norm:

Could you tell us something about your recently published book, Writing Home, and why you wanted to write the book.

Cindy:

After Innsider folded due to lack of ad revenue I decided to
work from home and spend more time with my son, who was barely 6 and growing up way too fast. I didn´t want to miss any of that, so I managed to get some freelance jobs writing for local papers as well as national magazines.

That´s when I found I had a knack for writing personal essays and
"slice of life newspaper columns. I found a comfortable niche for myself in that genre. Writing Home is a collection of those short pieces. While they are personal essays, they all chronicle some of the universal themes that touch many of us learning how to let go of children as they grow up; learning how to be a family; watching parents age and die; dealing with midlife crisis in the meantime....One reporter said my pieces were about
finding the sacred in the suburban, and I think that´s a good way to explain my stuff and my new book.

Norm:

What makes a good journalist, and do you find that today a great deal of journalism is pure and simple sensationalism.

Cindy:

I am really saddened at what has happened with journalism today.
Yes, I do think a lot of what´s sold as "news" is often sensationalized to the point where average readers no longer trust what they read anymore.

Readers often tell me that newspapers, for the most part, are very depressing -- and that the top stories make them lose faith in our world. A lot of front-page news makes people feel angry and hopeless. Bad news seems to inspire more bad news, but that is what "sells" papers.
I have tried, at various times, to pitch hopeful stories to various editors because I think there are MANY wonderful things going on in our communities that don´t get press. But you know what? I have been told that people don´t really want to read good news, and that good news doesn´t sell papers. How else can we explain the success of those awful, cheesy tabloids that sell like hotcakes in the grocery store checkout lines, for example?

That said, Norm, I want to point out there are a few papers that are as objective as humanly possible, run by editors who believe in the dignity of the world and the intelligence of their readers. The Christian Science Monitor is one such paper. (I am not employed by them, but I have published several pieces in the CSM). It continues to be well-regarded by readers and
other journalists who aim high.

Norm:

What advice would you give to anyone who wishes to pursue a career in journalism or travel writing?

Cindy:

You have to be willing to write for smaller markets, just to get
started. You won´t get into the bigger magazines or newspaper right away, so you need to focus on building a clip file published pieces that show you can write and have a sense for what makes a good travel piece. It takes time and diligence, and a lot of writers give up because it is competitive and the pay isn´t so great. Sometimes you have to be pleased just to get a
byline, which is sad but true. Budgets are being cut right and left at newspapers these days, and the first things to be cut are the lifestyles pieces.

If you can put up with this situation and are willing to pay your
dues and start small, you´ve got a chance. I got started in my local daily, with a circ of less than 20,000, and eventually was able to publish my work in Reader´s Digest and other national publications. Keep at it -- and enjoy the process. Ask yourself if you really want to write, or you just want to be published -- there´s a huge difference!

Norm:

When you write your various columns, what do you wish to achieve?

Cindy:

I want to make a heartfelt connection to my readers. I want them to feel less alone as they try to make sense of the very complicated lives we are all living &. If someone tells me that they related to a piece I wrote, or that they felt like I was really telling their story well, then I have hit the mark and done my job.

Norm:

Where do your ideas come from?

Cindy:

Ideas come from everyday life, from paying attention to what is around me. I think all writers have to be, in a way, Zen masters. If you are not focused on what is happening around you if you´re always thinking about the next thing on your to-do list -- you are not going to write anything that hits
people where they live.

Norm:

Would you like to add anything that we have not discussed?

Cindy:

Thank you for asking me to participate here, Norm. It´s very important for writers to share their experiences and help each other along the way. I appreciate this opportunity.

Norm:

Thanks once again Cindy for participating in our interview and good luck in all of your future endeavors.

Creating the Perfect Closet

Your closet is often the first thing you see in the morning, and its condition can determine your mood for the day. There is something about an orderly closet that makes a person feel stylish and in-control. But digging through a cluttered closet, trying to find a matching outfit can dampen even the brightest of spirits. Not a very good way to start the day!

WHAT'S IN YOUR CLOSET?

The road to organization begins with an honest evaluation of your wardrobe. Is your closet filled with clothes that don't fit, are out of style, or haven't been worn in the last year? They're out of here! Are you guilty of owning a garment that you can't wear because it doesn't go with a single thing in your closet? Make a decision right here and now -- either find something to match that cool paisley shirt or get rid of it.

Now separate out any pieces that need to be mended or cleaned. You may want to put a couple of labeled baskets in your closet for regular laundry, dry cleaning, and alterations. Try not to hang anything in your closet that is not CURRENTLY WEARABLE. And if you want to keep your closet under control, plan to purge your wardrobe every few months. Now that you have pared down, let's set up your closet so that you know where everything is:

BY SEASON

Start by separating your clothes into "fall / winter" and "spring / summer" items. Make sure to do the same with your accessories, lingerie, and outerwear, as well. How does your wardrobe balance out? Do you have a closet full of summer clothes, but only 3 winter outfits? That's okay for someone who lives in South Florida -- but if your home is above the Mason-Dixon line, it's time to go shopping! If you find that you are short on space in your bedroom closet, consider storing the off-season in another part of the house. A spare bedroom closet or portable armoire in the attic might be the perfect answer. Just be aware of climatic concerns and guard against insect infestations -- especially when storing wool clothing.

BY CLOTHING TYPE

Now, you will want to sort through the current season's clothes, creating logical categories based on the way that you normally think about your wardrobe. You can arrange your clothes according to PURPOSE, breaking out formal, work, and casual outfits. Or, you could organize by TYPE -- grouping jackets separate from blouses separate from pants. And in either situation, it's always good to create different categories for each STYLE of clothing -- such as storing short-sleeve shirts in one place and long-sleeve in another. Whichever method you choose, clearly delineate your categories -- either put labeled divider discs on your rod (like the ones used in department stores) or assign each section to a different part of the closet.

BY OUTFIT

I am an inherently lazy person. I don't want to spend time deciding what blouse goes with which pants, so I hang entire outfits together. What a time-saver! Of course, if you like to mix and match, this system may not be the best choice. If you do go this route, consider labeling each hanger with a list of accessories that accompany that particular garment. Feel free to include any small items, such as scarves or belts, right on the hanger with the outfit. One client of mine (who loves hanging her clothes in outfits) came up with a creative organizing idea -- she has a pair of earrings that only go with her navy suit, so she clips them right on the lapel!

BY COLOR

The final step is to organize each section of clothing by color. Going from light to dark, group items of the same hue together. You don't have to create a scientifically accurate color spectrum -- just generally group reds and pinks in one place, blues all together, etc. Now, when you need a black blouse, they will all be hanging in the same place. This will also allow you to see excesses and deficiencies in your wardrobe. One woman I worked with told me that organizing by color was the dumbest thing she had ever heard of -- until she tried it! She never knew she owned 12 different red T-shirts until re-arranging her closet. She also swears this technique saves her 20 minutes getting ready each morning!

The Advantages of Wall Mountable Stereos

A stereo system is now an essential part of home entertainment in any modern home. They come in a variety of sizes and brands with many features. You have to pay attention to their quality of sound and their ability to blend in with your home when buying a stereo system. Wall mounted stereos answer these requirements perfectly.

One of the main advantages of having wall mounted stereos is their space saving ability. They are compact in size and won't take up any floor space. Some people also believe that they provide better sound due to the fact that they are mounted on the wall. This may be because the sound cones are situated against an immovable wall and since the stereo moves less it is subject to fewer distortions. Another reason for better sound may be because there are fewer obstacles between the listener and the stereo. Sound quality goes up when the stereo is placed against a wall since sound waves reflect off the wall.

Also keep in mind that even if your stereo isn't mountable, you can make use of wall mountable stereo shelves to achieve the same space saving results and sound quality. And don't forget, you can make use of the corners in your rooms, where the space is usually wasted and that will give you an additional advantage.

Placement

While you can save space by mounting the stereo on the wall, you should also pay attention to the correct placement to get the best out of the stereo system. You shouldn't forget that your primary goal is to obtain the best sound quality. However, since most audio experts agree that placing the stereo in corner of a room gives you optimum sound quality, you can kill two birds with one stone. When the stereo is in a corner, the sound waves reflect against the walls, the floor, and the ceiling of the corner it is in. So you can see how this can work in your favor.

Also, when you're mounting your stereo against the wall, keep in mind that you should place it at a convenient height. You'll want make sure that you can access it easily with your remote control. Before you find a location for it, you should also take into account that curtains, carpets, and other items, can absorb sound and thus create a muffling effect.

Buying wall mountable stereo shelves

When buying wall mountable stereo shelves, you can buy shelves made specifically for stereos or simply choose to focus on your basic wall mountable shelf. These can come in variety of styles, ranging from classical to modern. They also come in a variety of materials, ranging from plastic to wood.

You'll want to be certain to select the shelves that will blend in with your room's décor, as well as fit within the means of your budget size. Also, you'll want to be sure that the shelves are able to hold the weight of your stereo. You should also consider the shelves' ease of installation. Some wall stereo shelves do not require power tools, or studs to mount.

And remember, you can also save more space by having wall mountable CD racks and other storage compartments nearby so you can store your audio collections and other accessories out of the way.

With some knowledge and foresight you can have a great sounding stereo system that doesn't take up a lot of space and has the look and feel you desire.

Fireplace Insert Ideas

While it is true that a fireplace insert is great for bringing life back to that old traditional or gas fireplace you have sitting dormant in the living room, a fireplace insert can do so much more for your home. If you have ever looked around your home and wondered how much it would cost to put a fireplace in a certain wall, room or area, you will be surprised when you hear the answer.

While construction and labor costs for a traditional or gas fireplace can cost upwards of ten thousand dollars, you can actually have a fireplace built for merely hundreds if you use a fireplace insert and some materials from your local hardware store. Now, I can't deny that it is nice to have a wall mounted gas fireplace that lights with a simple remote. But, a wall mounted gel fireplace can be installed in merely hours for thousands of dollars less.

So when you think about the fireplace insert when you think about new fireplace construction, you have possibilities that literally will never end. I have written reports, DIYs, articles and plenty of blog posts about most of the possibilities. It's hard not to mention such unique areas as in the bathroom, bedroom, office, and dining room. Those are rooms that traditionally don't have fireplaces even though a more contemporary trend has been to build certain types in these rooms. But, we can stretch our imaginations for some fireplace ideas that transcend even those.

The Corner Fireplace
Traditionally, fireplaces go in the center of the wall. But, we have evolved into forward thinking visionaries. We are no longer limited by the way things have always been. We put fireplaces in the corner. With a fireplace insert and some building supplies, you can have a fireplace that is more unique than the one your best friend has. You can either learn how to do it yourself, because it is completely safe when you use a fireplace insert with gel fuel, or you can ask a friend of yours to help you. It's that easy.

Middle of the Room
Why have it along the wall? Why have it in the corner, even though that is a great idea? Why not put a fireplace in the middle of the room? You hardly need any supplies from the hardware store. Build a simple brick or rock structure for your fireplace insert and you have the neatest indoor fireplace you have ever seen.

If you have a sitting arrangement where you have made it possible for people to pretty much focus on one point, then you have a great place for a fireplace. It's just like arranging a room around a television. Only this time, it's a different room where no fireplace exists. It's just a nice place to talk and enjoy each other's company with a fireplace...in the middle of the room.

Back Yard
That's right! Take it outside. Enjoy the fireplace experience in your backyard. Put it on the patio or your deck. Anywhere you think you would like to have some company, build yourself a nice fireplace. Of course, you can get a little more involved with the fireplace construction and build yourself a nice rock or brick structure to house your fireplace insert. Let it stand about six feet tall if you want. It's up to you. Learn how to build it and your company will come.

Those are all great ideas. But, give your own home some thought. If you have an area, any area that you think would look nice with a fireplace, chances are you are right. The only stupid place for a fireplace, is that place where there isn't one yet.

Declutter - It is Time to Be Picky

Clutter is all around us. Have you noticed that almost everyone has a cell phone up to their head while driving these days? Multi-tasking can be a good thing but can also be too much of a good thing. Constantly trying to cram just one more thing into your day causes stress and leads to anxiety.

Doing too many things at one time can also mean that none of those things are getting done well. Have you found yourself forgetting things lately? Do you find the simplest task can be overwhelming? The mind can only function with all this stress for a short time. When it gets overloaded, it has to have some relief. If you don't provide some respite from the overload, it will get creative and start to declutter on its own.

I have found myself at times starting to forget the simplest things. The first thing I start to forget is names. Does that happen to you? It can be very frustrating. For me, that is my first warning that I need to de-stress. It is helpful to just lean back in your seat, or sit down if you are standing. Take three deep breaths. Focus on your breathing and center your thoughts on your physical state. If you are where you can safely do so, bring your thoughts back into the core of your being.

Be conscious of your surroundings and take a moment to mentally organize your thoughts. What is the most important thing you need to do right now? Can you do that one thing first and then move onto the next? Take a pen and paper and list the things you need to do and then number them in the order of their importance. Are there some things you can eliminate? Try making some time for yourself today. It will help you be more productive in both your professional and personal life. It is time to pick out the things that you really want to do instead of what you feel being lke you are supposed to do. Your well being may be at stake here.

Facts to Be Considered When Building a Shed

Everyone knows what a shed is used for. Whether you want to store your winter or summer stuff, you first need to determine the proper size for your shed. Looking at all the things you want to put in will help you figure out the dimensions of your shed. It must be built to satisfy your requirements. Also consider some extra space in case you might want to store other stuff.

The next element is to plan the look of your shed. There are many communities that abide by rigid regulations concerning the design of a shed. They focus on the dimensions in comparison to the size of your property, the direction that the door must face, and so on. It is essential to check out with the local authorities to have an idea of the guidelines to be followed.

Wood is definitely the most popular material used to construct a shed. A wooden shed does not necessitate any kind of sophisticated tools. Considering the fact that wood easily becomes affected by water, there needs to be a minimum of six inches of room between the floor and the ground. The wood is required to be treated against rotting. Furthermore there must be about sixteen inches over hangs from the roofing as well as appropriate gutters and spouts to ensure that rainfalls will not decay the wooden walls.

The shed door should not be a swinging one. This is very awkward as well as quite bothersome during windy days. It is advisable to get a six foot overhanging door. These kinds of doors are reasonably priced and very practical.

Buying a shed can be quite costly. Besides, to find the right design can take you a long time since you will have to shop at many different places. Building your own wooden shed can be fun and it is quite easy, even if you are not that skilled. All you need is to find a good quality shed plan that includes a list of all the required tools and materials to realize the project as well as detailed instructions. You can find shed plans online that also include video tutorials. Building your own shed is much cheaper and you can find the exact design that suits your tastes.

Store Your Dinnerware With a Kitchen Plate Rack

When it comes to serving food, you need dishware and eating utensils. Plates, which are found in every kitchen, are commonly used to serve food. Not only are they useful on dinner table, they can be just as beautiful an item to be displayed as decorations in your home. However, when you have too many plates in your kitchen, your kitchen can look messy after you have done your washing if there is no way you can leave them to dry properly before keeping them in the kitchen cabinet. This is when kitchen plate storage rack comes into the picture to help you solve your problem, so as to keep the kitchen organized.

A kitchen plate rack is a piece of furniture which you use to dry your plates after they are washed. Normally, plate racks are fixed or placed near the basin where the person doing the dish washing is able to reach it conveniently. Some of these plate racks are placed on the kitchen counters while others can be fixed onto the wall. If you go around sourcing for a suitable plate storage rack, you should be able to discover that these racks are really designed beautifully and of course some of these racks will cost much more than others in the market.

What are the advantages of having a plate rack in your kitchen?

1. Since there are several different types of plate racks available in the market with different designs and colors, you should have no problem finding one that blends into your kitchen décor perfectly.
2. Since there are storage space to keep all your washed plates, your kitchen will indeed look neat and organized.
3. With more storage space, you will find your home more spacious to place other furniture or appliances.
4. Many of these plate racks are designed to allow users to have more storage space for other dishware or eating utensils. Not only plates, dishware like bowls and saucers, utensils like spoon and forks can also be stored on this rack.
5. While plate racks are originally designed to store dishware, some people actually have them kept in the guest room to store other items like magazines, books, CDs and others because they are really useful and can come in very handy.

As mentioned, there are many different types of plate racks with different designs and color. These racks can be manufactured from different materials like stainless steel, wood, aluminum, plastics, iron, to name but a few. Even when we focus only on wood, there are still many different types of wood to consider. However, the decision on which types of rack is most suitable will depend greatly on your needs as well as the designs of your kitchen.

Needs - If you know that your rack will have to get wet most of the time, it is advised against getting wooden rack as it can corrode very easily. Stainless steel rack should be a much better choice.

Designs - You cannot possibly buy and install a dish rack which can make your whole kitchen unsightly. When the design and theme are mismatched, the furniture can ruin your kitchen design and hence, even affect your mood whenever you walk into this part of the house.

Nobody can deny the fact that a kitchen plate rack is a very useful item. Putting one in your home can be easy, but to find a suitable one can take a little longer time. If you have no idea which type to get, it is always good to see the real display by yourself. You may look at your friends' or neighbors' dish racks, you may like to visit some of your local furniture stores where they will commonly display the plate racks, or you may search through the internet where many merchants are selling and providing valuable information for their visitors. These are some effective ways to help you in making the right decision.

8 Time Saving Tips For Staying Organized

Getting organized is a huge undertaking if you've allowed the clutter to get out of control. You spend an entire weekend putting things back in order only to find yourself three months down the road with the same problem again. What can you do?

Incorporating these tips into your regular routine will not only keep you organized but will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Tip 1 - No clutter - No distraction. Keep only the items on your desk that you are using for that particular project so you are free from distractions.

Tip 2 - Write it down! Writing things down will save time and frustration later. Why take the chance of forgetting an appointment when it only takes seconds to write it down?

Tip 3 - Schedule block times to work on similar tasks. Pay bills & enter the items in you money management program while everything is on your desk and fresh in your mind. Make all your phone calls together, sign birthday, holiday and business cards for the whole month in one sitting.

Tip 4 - Clean your filing cabinet. Go through and organized your papers & folders. Then schedule time to purge your files. This can be done monthly, quarterly, bi-annually or even annually, just make sure you do it on a regular basis.

Tip 5 - Use one calendar. Having one calendar to keep track of all your work and personal dates will eliminate missed or conflicting appointments. You can buy a large desktop calendar with plenty of room for all your appointments from an office supply store for under $10.

Tip 6 - Set a timer! If you are still establishing a routine or just aren't good at following them, set a timer or alarm to go off when it's time for you to switch tasks. This will keep you on schedule and help you figure out how long you need to complete each task.

Tip 7 - Keep your receipts together. I have a coupon organizer in my purse with each section labeled according to my tax expenses (fuel, supplies, dinner meetings, rental equipment, etc). When I get a receipt, I automatically put it in the appropriate section so when I get home it's already separated for me.

Tip 8 - Have a drawer organizer for all your small desk items such as paper clips, pens, rubber bands, etc. Having everything in one place saves time when reaching for something because you know where it is. Another benefit is you can see at a glance when you need to restock multiple items.

By scheduling in a few minutes once a day/week/month to staying organized you won't have to worry about losing control. You'll have less stress and more time to devote to more important business tasks.

Become a Smart Shopper For Collectible Action Figures

Whether you're new to action figure collecting or want to increase your buying sense, it's wise to gain as much knowledge as possible about buying and preserving the value of your collection. Collecting begins with buying, and the smarter a shopper you are, the more likely you'll end up with a collection with lasting value. Here are some basic tips to find great figure collectibles for your favorite comic book hero, sports legend memorabilia, music legends figures, or whatever appeals to you.

Start with Knowledge

Learn as much as possible about action figures and collecting in general. Read magazines and use the Internet to find out how other collectors find valuable items. Gain access to little known secrets by speaking with action figure collectors in online forums and newsgroups. Subscribe to a few newsletters or e-zines that offer weekly collector tips and resources.

And don't stop there...narrow your research to certain action figures you'd like to collect. For instance, if you want to start a SCI-FI collection, research items such as Star Wars action figures, Transformers toys, Star Trek figures, etc. Perhaps you want to focus on movie memorabilia. In this case, you might consider Avatar movie toys or Harry Potter memorabilia. The key is to research specific categories of interest to find the best information about your desired items.

Save Your Money

Instead of buying up every item you find, save your money and be patient as you shop for action figures. At first glance, it might seem that an item is rare and will never be available to you again, but waiting a bit might give you something even better. Successful collectors understand the importance of shopping around and researching before taking that dive into their wallet!

Watch Out for Scalpers

Scalpers operate by purchasing a large number of highly advertised or low-run collectibles off the retail shelves, and then selling them at two or three times the retail price. Though this practice is technically not illegal, it does cause the after-market pricing of action figures to be extremely high. The best way to avoid scalpers is to monitor local stores to see if this might be happening in your town. Or, simply buy your items online and compare retail pricing before you shop to be sure you're getting a fair price.

Top Five Things You Can Do With Old CD's

Got a lot of old discs you don't know what to do with? Don't throw them away! They've got plenty of uses, from the practical to the creative and even the bizarre. Here are ten things you can do with old CD's and DVD's-instead of sending them to the landfill.

Recycle. Some facilities will recycle your used discs.

Try GreenDisk greendisk.com in the U.S.
The Laundry thelaundry.biz or
cDVDs in the UK cdvds.co.uk

Donate them to a worthy cause. Check out the SPCA's Discs for Dogs program in the U.S. DiscsForDogs.org/, as well as Charity CD's fundraising-ideas.org.uk/ and Focus on Blindness birminghamfocus.org.uk/html/display.php/id/419?PHPSESSID=b1d342bdf in the U.K.

Use them to scare away birds. The reflections scare away birds and other animals that typically feed on vegetables in your garden.

Make a mobile for the baby's crib. Tie string around the centre of several old CD's, and attach them to a wire frame. Hang the frame from a light fixture or a hook on the ceiling. Babies love the reflective surfaces, and you'll love getting such good use out of old discs.

Sell them. If you have used music CD's that you want to get rid of, try approaching a used music store to see if they'll buy them from you. Game stores will often buy used game discs and movies as well.

If you have a house full of unwanted CD's and DVD's, there are plenty of ways you can keep those discs from piling up, either at home or at the landfill.

As the economy continues on a downward spiral with no real hope in sight as job losses mount, more people are turning to the internet as a way to make money. The internet represents a number of ways for people to make money, especially those who have a desire to write and the ambition and drive to really build a writing business of their own.

The first problem that new writers face is how they should go about establishing themselves as professional writers in order to make the most of the opportunities available to them.

The internet presents the best opportunity to establish a "store front" or a kind of cyber office that is accessible to the public. It is the electronic equivalent of having a commercial retail spot.

Begin your writing career by building an on-line presence for yourself. This has never been easier and no web mastering skills are required. You can get a domain name from a reliable provider like GoDaddy for less than $10 per year. You can get hosting from the same company or a wide variety of others for around $50 per year.

Among these are the wide variety of opportunities presented by the internet in the area of self-publishing. Blogging is one example of this new kind of opportunity. Writers make money by posting unique articles, usually from a personal point of view. Sometimes blogs have the purpose of promoting particular types of products. Or, they may simply be monetized using popular advertising affiliate programs like Google AdSense and Kontera. Very popular blogs that receive a lot of visitors make money by selling advertising space.

But, professional blogging is only one of many new opportunities for writers. All kinds of affiliate marketing has become increasingly popular with writers who are well-suited to the task of creating content to promote products in return for commission.

Repairing Putty Window Glass

Have you ever thought about fixing a broken window in your house, but didn't think you could do it because nobody ever taught you how to cut glass? Well, you really don't have to know how to cut glass in order to repair your window. If you knew how to remove the frame, you could order a replacement piece of glass from your local glass shop already cut to the proper size. Then, it's just a matter of installing the new glass into the frame. But, there are so many different kinds of window out there, there is no way i could explain them all in one article. So, this is going to be the first in a series of articles describing the repair procedure for each type of window.

There are really two categories of windows out there. They are single pane windows and dual pane windows. Then, within those two categories, there are several types of windows in each category. Let's start with the single pane window category. This would be older windows that were around before the building industry became more energy conscious. It just means that there is a single piece of glass in the frame that surrounds it. A lot of homeowners mistakenly think a horizontal sliding window must be a double pane window, since there is a pane of glass in the sliding panel and another pane in the stationary panel. The terminology refers to the number of panes in the sliding or fixed panel alone. In other words, a single pane horizontal sliding window has a single pane of glass in the sliding panel, and a single pane in the fixed panel. A double pane slider would actually have two pieces of glass in both the sliding panel and fixed panel. The pieces in each panel are separated by approximately 3/8" of air, and have a metal spacer around the edge of the glass.

So, let's get back to the single pane repairs. One of the more common types of single pane windows are the type that uses putty to hold the glass in the frame. All old wood windows are done this way. Old metal casement windows are usually done this way as well. The casement window is the kind with the handle on the inside bottom corner that you crank, and the window opens outward on a top and bottom pivot. Let's focus this article on the putty style replacements.

Before you begin, pick a local glass shop in your area where you will go to pick up the new glass. Make sure they are going to be open the day you do the work, and confirm with them that if you call in an order for a pane of glass in the morning, you can pick it up in an hour or two. You dont want to remove the glass from the window frame, then find out the glass shop won't have your glass cut until next week. If they can't guarantee a two hour turnaround, keep looking.

The fastest and easiest way to remove the old glass is to break it out. Put an old sheet or a tarp on the ground below the window. Then, put on some gloves. Use gloves with a material that will prevent a piece of glass from cutting your hands. A pair of gardening gloves should work fine. Get yourself a pair of safety glasses as well. Trust me, you don't want to get hit in the eye with a piece of flying glass. As my Father always used to tell me, "Better safe than sorry". Now, go inside with a hammer in hand and knock the glass out of the center part of the window. It's best to leave some glass sticking out around the edge. You can grab the protruding glass and use it as leverage to pop the old putty loose. The more old putty that you can get to come out along with the glass, the less scraping you will have to do. I have done some wood window replacements where the putty was dried and cracked, and it practically fell out on it's own. On the flip side, i have done some where the putty had almost become a part of the wood. The only way to separate the putty from the frame in those instances is to use a putty knife to scrape it down to the wood. While removing the putty, you will find little pieces of metal that are used to hold the glass in place while applying the putty. The wood windows use push points, and you can get a package of new ones at the hardware store. If you're working with the metal casement window, the metal clips are called sash clips. You might have a harder time finding these. Frankly, i don't see any problem reusing them.

Once you have all the glass and putty removed, clean the frame with a paint brush. Then measure the width at three spots:bottom, middle, and top. Take the smallest measurement and deduct 1/8" for wood windows and 3/8" for steel casements. Then, measure the height at the left side, center, and right side. Take the smallest measurement and deduct 1/8" on wood windows and 1/4" on casements. When you order your new glass, order double strength glass, and give the width first, then the height. When you get the new glass home, the installation process is slightly different between wood and steel windows. If it's wood, put a thin bead of caulk on the frame where the glass is going to make contact. Install the glass. The caulk will hold the glass in place while you install the push points. You can either apply putty or use white caulk instead. If you're going to use caulk, cut the tip below the tapered part, and cut at a 45 degree angle. You want the largest possible hole to allow the caulk to cover the large area previously covered by the putty. The caulk method is faster than putty, but it requires more skill to make the job look nice. If you have steel casements, the only option is putty. The area is just too large to use caulk. The sash clips install differently than the push points. The push points stick into the wood, but the sash clips insert into small holes in the side of the casement frame. Sometimes the holes get plugged with old putty and it's easy to overlook them. Take your time applying the putty. Make sure you use the putty knife to smooth the surface. You just repaired your putty window.

I will be on Christmas vacation for the next two weeks, but when I come back, I will continue this series of articles on repairing single pane windows.

Home Security Camera Systems

Security cameras are useful in improving the safety of residential and business buildings. Home security camera systems have gained phenomenal popularity over the years. With spectacularly enhanced digital imagery and moderate working costs, the use of security cameras has become quite widespread. The use of security camera systems is no longer limited to banks or department stores but is increasingly being used for residential security also.

Home security camera systems let you keep track of children at play and simultaneously can keep an eye on the front door. They vary in their appropriateness and operation, and it is imperative that the proper selection is made based on individual requirements to ensure their effectiveness.

While choosing a home security camera system you must decide on the area to be observed, and the camera should be located at a suitable distance in order to focus on the preferred area. In case there is a need to mount the camera on a wall or structure, a mounting bracket can be placed at the predetermined spot, and the position of mounting screws can be indicated.

While opting for a wired system, the camera and monitor should be connected in accordance with instructions. Care should be taken to not expose the wiring, so the home security system cannot be sabotaged. And always remember to keep these gadgets out of reach of children.

Another crucial issue that should also be given adequate importance is the number of cameras that one would like to employ in the home security camera system. Some systems have room for only one or two, whereas other systems offer more. There are also camera systems which incorporate microphones, allowing you to hear and see the required object at the same time.

How to Buy Cotton Quilting Fabric - Part I

Buying quilting fabric seems like it should be pretty simple. And, frankly, when I began quilting, it was simple. At least I made it that way. I wandered through the fabric store and found fabric I liked - the pattern, the color, the design. But generally, I bought fabric just because I liked it.

As a result, my quilting fabric stash included all types of fabrics - polyesters, cotton/polyesters, rayons, and some wools. After a few quilting experiences (some of which were pretty bad), I learned the advantages of different fabrics. Now I look at a few different things when I consider fabrics to buy.

Generally I prefer natural fibers. It's probably a sense of connecting to quilters of yesteryear. Or it may be that a comment made to me years ago about "wrapping a baby in plastic (polyester)" just stuck with me - in a negative sense.

While I prefer natural fibers, I have made some fun quilts that include lame, and an occasional polyester or poly/cotton blend, because it offered some design benefit that I couldn't find in cotton - like a sports logo.

This is one of a series of articles about different types of fabric quilters use in their quilts. For simplicity, I will focus on the natural fibers cotton, wool and silk. I have used them all (although not in the same quilt). So you will get my firsthand experience and observations. Personal opinion as it is.

Since you can go online and find plenty of articles and websites that describe the fascinating way fabric is made and dyed, I'll let them do the describing about that, and I will focus just on what quilters want to know - how will it be working with that type of fabric?

Since 100% cotton fabric is clearly the most popular quilting fabric, let's start there.

There are several specific reasons quilters prefer 100% cotton:

o Cotton is easy to work with. After you sew a seam, you can easily finger press your seam allowances in the direction you want them to go. (That means that your fabric will stay put without pressing it every step along the way.)

o Cotton sticks together while you sew your pieces. Polyester tends to slip and slide, requiring pinning or basting, lest your patches end up being sewn all cockeyed.

o Cotton has a little "give" to it that synthetics don't have. This allows you to pull and tug a bit (as well as bunch it up a little) in order to get the seams to match and make your corners square.

o Cotton breathes. Whether you are making a baby quilt or a bed quilt, 100% cotton fabric will allow air to circulate while capturing the warmth. How this works is just a mystery to me, but it seems to be true.

o Cotton absorbs the dyes better. Maybe it's just me, but I think that the colors are more vibrant and the patterns have more depth.

o Cotton is durable. It has stood the test of time and constant use.

o Cotton can be torn (or ripped). Although this can be a benefit or a drawback, it means that you will be able to determine exactly how the fibers line up. You will be able to "square up" the edge just torn, since it will not rip across the threads.

Part II explores the types of 100% cotton fabric, and some of the considerations as you purchase and use these fabrics in your quilts.

When Do I Sign the Contract? - Remodeling Tips For Homeowners and Contractors

Okay you've finally found a good contractor and now it's time to sign the contract, but how do you know for sure that you have a good contract. You're not really going to know for sure, until the entire project is completed, but there are a few things that we can do to prevent some problems in the future.

A good contract will have enough information in it the project, scope of work to be provided by the contractor and legal contract clauses. Let's start with the project and the scope of work to be provided by the contractor. This will be a detailed written description of every thing that the contractor is going to do to your construction project or house.

If you're remodeling your bathroom, the construction contract should have model numbers and a good description for your bathtub, toilets, tile, flooring, fixtures and even the paint that you're going to use for your ceilings and walls. Once you have this and you're happy with it, we can focus on the clauses in the contract. Do they make sense to you and do you understand everything that's written in the contract?

If you don't understand something or disagree with something in the contract, explain your situation to the contractor and try to have the construction claws removed. A contract is an agreement between two people, not an agreement between one person who's planning on taking advantage of another person.

A good contract has enough information in it to make both parties happy. If you're not happy with your construction contract, make the necessary changes or find another contractor who's willing to work with you.

Poultry House Construction - Is Poultry House Construction For You?

Poultry house construction is one of the newest and most rapidly growing projects right now. Everyone and their neighbors are suddenly interested in the idea of learning to build a chicken hen house. So it is for you too?

As with any project around the house if done correctly in the beginning, it should eliminate most of the problems that could occur down the road. When it comes to building a chicken hen house it is important to consider several factors but giving your pet poultry a warm safe place to live will certainly make them more productive at rearing eggs as well as make them healthier and happier. And do not forget your needs; if you have the correct plans for poultry house construction, you can make your life considerably easier too!

As with any project, money can be a concern for a lot of us when we begin to consider what it is going to take to build a coop, which is why you will find that many people are choosing to build their own. Building your own coop can result in spending a considerable amount less cash and can turn out to be even better than some already built one. Building your own chicken hen house can give you the opportunity to use recycled materials, things you have laying around the house anyway and even give you more opportunity to build one that fits your needs more specifically.

But if you choose to build your own chicken coop there are a few things to make sure you take into consideration before you begin:

Plan ahead, so you do not have to look back!

If your are trying to save some cash, and I am certain you probably are, I would recommend that you find a set of plans right out of the gate. Free plans are available online, but not necessarily my recommendation, as they are not as complete as you will need in order to have the best experience. As we know, often "free" stuff does not always come as detailed as we would like. A good set of plans should set you back no more than $30, but in the end will save you endless amounts of time and frustration, along with saving you many trips to the hardware store.

Consider how many chickens you are starting with, as well as how many you hope to house in the future. The size of your coop is greatly going to depend on how many chickens you hope to raise. But do not focus on how many you hope to start out with, focus on how many you intend to end up with, because building on to your coop is a lot more challenging than building it in the first place.

Protect you pet poultry, not only from predators but from themselves as well.

Chickens can find themselves getting into some pretty sticky situations if you do not have control over their environment. Also, chickens are especially desirable to predators because they can be easy prey, so make sure they are protected their home, so they can feel safe inside.

You must also consider protecting them from the environments, wind, rain, dampness, humidity, and cold or excessively hot temperatures.

When it comes to poultry house construction, you will not have to worry much about it being difficult or expensive if you simply find a good source for chicken hen house plans. Trust me when I tell you it pay for its self once you realize all the information you would have missed out on if you had not purchased some.
